HEIFER INTERNATIONAL – Kampala, Uganda March 2017 – December 2020 BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT MANAGER

Brought on board to lead the Business Development team for East Africa Dairy Development Project (EADD) in Uganda.

Key Contributions and Results:

Spearheaded daily operations of the EADD field implementation while responsible for 2 Senior Business Advisors, projects’ work-plan and grants of $3.5million in annual project budgets (Eastern, Central and Western Uganda).

Program management to ensure business development for East Africa Dairy Development project in Uganda ensuring that farmer owned dairy businesses are profitable for 15 cooperatives (10 in South Western Uganda and 5 in Near East, major role was to ensure that cooperative businesses are professionally managed and profitable sustainably ensuring that hub services are established and functional. During my employment was able to improve milk volumes for the 15 cooperatives from 400,000 liters per annum to 28million liters per annum by the end of the project, built business hubs where each cooperative had established Agro-vet shop, financial services and feeds store at the cooperative premises and all the 15 cooperatives were profitable.

Experience with multi-sectoral programs that address economic growth, financial services, impact investing, SME lending, financial market systems, training and financial inclusion in Uganda.

Improved access to finance by dairy cooperatives linked to Uganda Development bank and obtained agricultural loan worth 3.8 billion Uganda shillings by 4 cooperatives in South Western and Central Uganda.

Established and maintained strong working and business relationships with key actors of the dairy value chain, processors, dairy boards and regulatory institutions, financial service providers, local and central governments (PPP promoters). Helped to have public and private partnerships established to spur development of dairy sector, regulators like Dairy Development Sector, Uganda Development bank, and other financial providers like Centenary bank, Stanbic and DFCU, veterinary drug companies, Artificial Inseminators and other value chain players work together to develop the sector with win-win situation for all actors.

Lead specialized business advisory services and training to address the commercial needs of various value chain actors within the dairy subsector, where i was able to establish linkages with other value chain actors like national veterinary drug companies like Global Vet, MTK, Quality Chemicals establishing business relationships with Dairy cooperatives leading to improved access to animal drugs by farmers leading to improved milk volumes. Also established linkages with Uganda Development Bank for farmers to access affordable credit for dairy farming and overall UGX 3.8 billion was accessed by 5 cooperatives in South Western Uganda due to my efforts.

Developed inclusive coordination mechanism which foster transparency, trust and loyalty within the value chain actors, i was able to establish business relationships with milk processors and established platforms where processors work with dairy cooperatives as backward linkages for the good of dairy sector growth and business sustainability. Most value chain actors like processors, transporters, veterinary drug companies, animal feeds sellers and animal health service providers were linked together to harmoniously work together in the dairy sector

Increased overall level of competitiveness of the dairy sub-sector in the country where the level of formal actors increased from informal players who initially some of informal actors used to cheat farmers by offering lower prices and running way with farmers payments. I was able to help farmers sign supply contracts with milk buyers which improved farm gate price and long-term assurance of the market for farmers milk, this arrangement was through cooperative structures.

Lead day-to-day country business development project activities, including dairy businesses (projects) appraisal, budget management and work plan for Business services department comprised of 3 middle level staff whom i supervised in my department

Provided the strategic and operational business leadership for the project in the country ensuring that project objectives are achieved in planned schedule efficiently and effectively putting in mind value for money.

Budget and work planning management for the East Africa Dairy Development project to ensure all planned activities are conducted in accordance to approved work plan and budgets and kept track of project budgets at all the time.

ACDI/VOCA – Kampala Uganda February 2015 – February 2017 BUSINESS SERVICES SPECIALIST – RESILIENCE THROUGH WEALTH, AGRICULTURE AND NUTRITION (RWANU) Provided technical leadership to the business services team in the management, implementation and monitoring of the 5year, USAID-funded ($50M), Food For Peace (FFP) Food Security, Health, Nutrition and WASH project, while managing project budgets, logistics, and human resource activities. Oversaw $2.5 million annually in project budgets and 8 project officers in business unit, including agribusiness, VSLAs, honey value chain, and input and output market activities.

Facilitated establishment of first agro-input dealers in South Karamoja (Moroto, Napa, Nakapiripirt and Amudat districts) and linked them to national suppliers, cumulatively they sold over 850 million within first season and improved access to quality inputs in South Karamoja.

VOLUNTARY SERVICE OVERSEAS (VSO) – Banjul The Gambia September 2011 – November 2014 SENIOR TECHNICAL ADVISOR – GROWTH AND COMPETITIVENESS PPROJECT (GCP) Provided technical and advisory oversight on implementation of project activities in The Gambia. Functioned as Technical Director for Operations and partnerships and improved market access for smallholder farmers on partnership development, local seed business, access to agro-finance, and food and nutrition security. Key Contributions and Results:

Managed a team of 6 program staff (2 program managers and 4 program officers) on production of nutrient dense foods/crops, post harvest management practices and access to the market.

Helped development of the 2012-2017 strategic plan, paving way for inclusion of youth and women in agribusiness development.

Formulated the input sector development strategy through a revolving fund scheme, that grew the portfolio from $12,000 to $35,000 within a year.

Developed and secured strategic partnerships on the agribusiness value chain, and climate Smart Agriculture including: − A $1.2M grant from the UNDP in support of climate mitigation and adaptation strategies in Central River Region of the Gambia.

− Secured funding from European Union for improving socio-economic rights of women in The Gambia targeting Central River Region and Upper River Region of the Gambia.

− Capacity building of input and output dealers in safe use of agrochemicals and business development.

− Support to the development of input and output markets using the network of dealers and distributors.

− Demonstration of technologies on post-harvest management and use of dealers as sales agents. Facilitated gender mainstreaming in the agricultural value chain through business mentorship and financial literacy.

Analyzed funding needs for new business opportunities and scaling up of agribusiness models, leading to asset acquisition (maize milling machines, motorized sprayers, and micro-irrigation facilities) for 3,500 farmers in Upper River Region, Lower River Region and Central River Region through village savings and revolving fund schemes.

Championed development of agro-processing groups on production and consumption of nutritious composite flour.

In collaboration with partner financial institutions, conducted training of trainers on the establishment and operations of village savings and loan association as part of market support systems.

Led the annual review of programme and development of policy briefs on Aflatoxin in grains, agribusiness mentorship for women and youths. This led to 20% increased adoption of hermetic storage facilities, grain safety and expansion of grain business among youths and women.

Capacity built and mentored National Women Farmers Association (NaWFA) VSO partner organizations’ staff in Resource mobilization, project proposals writing, financial management, Institutional development, value chain analysis, agricultural production, marketing &processing, project design, implementation and evaluation.

Conducted various value chains including groundnuts, sesame, cashew nuts and horticultural crops for NaWFA members (small holder farmers) so as to improve their productivity and incomes out of their farming businesses.

Developed Farmer Field Schools (FFS) training manual, trained extension workers in this approach to agricultural development, and facilitated implementation of FFS in the production of groundnuts in the six Regions of the Gambia to improve production.

Supported Human Resources management at NaWFA by leading staff recruitments to ensure high level professionalism during entire process as result we were able to acquire best talented staff in new projects that were funded during my stay in the Gambia.

Developed Monitoring and evaluation tools for projects I designed and trained staff and partners to improve their capacity in M&E tools, data collection and analysis for various projects we won, this led to NaWFA becoming one of best NGOs implementing IFAD projects in the Gambia.

Developed and finalized Business management, ground nuts production (entire value chain), and Human Resources training manual for use in The Gambia Growth and Competitiveness Project funded by World Bank and trained (Trainer of Trainers-ToTs) front line extension workers and Community Development Officers in all 6 Regions of The Gambia who are grass root workers of this project.

UGANDA NATIONAL AGRO-INPUT DEALERS ASSOCIATION – Kampala Uganda Sept 2010 – Sept 2011 PROJECT COORDINATOR – COMESA REGIONAL AGRO-INPUT PROJECT Provided overall oversight of COMRAP project in Uganda including leadership, program design, implementation, and monitoring and evaluation, in addition to management oversight of 4 Regional Program Officers and 2 national based staff and synergies with staff of 2 consortium partners. Provided operational support to four Regional offices. Below are the key results during this assignment.

Key Contributions and Results:

Trained and mentored over 12,000 agro dealers’ country wide in Business management, Product knowledge and output marketing and these were able to reach 3million small holder farmers in Uganda with accesses of Quality inputs, farmer’s incomes improved as a result.

Facilitated linkages to finance through trainings on development of bankable business plans and over 450 million was accessed by agro-input dealers to improve business performance as additional working capital.

Program management of COMRAP in Uganda and ensured that set objectives are met effectively and efficiently and proved general overall management oversight including, planning, managing, budgeting, implementation, donor reporting, and sharing lessons learnt during implementation to inform new program development.

Supervised project staff at head office and in 4 Regions of Uganda, short term consultants and other service providers for the project in professional manner, we achieved 97% of project objectives in the project documents.

Net worked & Collaborated with local and International stakeholders & partners, like AGMARK, ACTESA, IFDC and European Union team and ensured project activities met project objectives. Built strong teams of diverse backgrounds of consultants, local government, academia, press & media houses, private sector players, Agricultural sector, financial institutions and were able to deliver this EC funded project in 5 COMESA countries (Uganda, Kenya, Rwanda, Ethiopia and Tanzania). Provided technical and operational oversight for programme area in South Western Uganda 2 projects covering food and nutrition security (banana value chains) and dairy value chains using market systems development. Key Contributions and Results:

Conducted capacity building of staff on climate smart agriculture, community managed malnutrition and agronomic best practices.

Mentored and capacity built Dairy Farmers Business Associations (DFBAs) in Cooperative business management so as to effectively manage their businesses and ensure they are profitable in the entire value chains.

Evaluated SMEs in agriculture sector (dairy farming) to establish growth-oriented Farmer Business Associations (FBAs) to be supported by the project in central Uganda.

Mobilized over 7000 banana farmers in 5 sub counties of Ntungamo district in South Western Uganda to effectively form farmers’ groups and market their bananas and milk produce to better markets thereby improving their value chains and fighting household poverty.

Supported over 6000 dairy farmers in Central Uganda (Maddu in Gomba district, Lugusulu and Nabitanga in Sembabule districts) to form milk farmer owned chilling plants businesses and mentored them to ensure they are running professionally, now they bulk over 60,000 litres of milk per day and these set business are running profitably as result of my intervention. Lead development of feasibility studies and business plans for establishment of farmer owned milk chilling plants in central Uganda and supported these cooperatives throughout the process of market access and establishment of other BDS services around the cooperatives to remain profitable.

Improved dairy value chains of over 6000 farmers in Central and saw them improve their income through better market access for their dairy produce, smallholder farmers were able to improve their welfare by use of extra incomes earned.

Mentored farmer groups / Cooperatives and were able to sustainably & professionally manage their businesses with my advisory services and started exploiting available opportunities (resources) to their advantage in fighting household poverty and in communities.

Mentored dairy Cooperatives and were able to mobilize equity of 40% for chilling plant initial start-up capital towards USD 100,000 that were required for setting up their chilling plant business and with my assistance we were able to link them for agricultural soft loans of up to 60% to run the chilling plant farmer owned business and it’s professionally run with better business management systems in place, poverty is something of the past to members in these chilling plants that were set up.

Identify potential local partners from the private sector for the support of cooperatives (farmer business associations) businesses within local areas.

Provided technical leadership in the situational analysis and conducted feasibility study on the rollout of the home- grown school feeding program in Karamoja Sub region. Client: The World Food Programme (WFP) of the Unite Nations. Key Contributions and Results:

Conducted project feasibility study of the Home-Grown School Feeding (HGSF).

Developed and submitted the proposal for home grown school feeding program with the focus of local commodity purchasing.

The overall grants amount of $750,000 is for a period of fourteen months with a target of 12,000 direct project participant farmers and 130,000 school pupils.

Served as a Consultant on the aBi Trust -funded proposal development for capacity building on production, post- harvest handling, and agro-processing technologies and practices for farm income development in Kiboga and Kyankwanzi districts.
