As a Visitor Services Associate I am front and center, first line of defense as we say it; there to make sure the guest has the best possible time they can. I work in a variety of places throughout the zoo, Gift Shop, Carousel, Budgies, Amazonia, and our Upper Kley building. Each day I usually have a different place that I work, so its never dull. Due to the Covid-19 virus I clean the areas that a guest will touch, run the attractions if that is where I am, and greet the guests as they come in so they feel warm, happy and comfortable during these hard times.

Education Coordinator

Mesker Park Zoo - Evansville, IN

October 2019 to January 2020

I answer phones, send emails, schedule, work very closely with not only other Education staff members but also all 85+ docents that we have. I correspond with teachers and businesses usually through email but also over the phone, who would like to visit the zoo as a group, have someone come to their business, or have docents or Education staff visit their classroom for programs, and also coordinate programs on zoo grounds as well. I basically make sure the entire Education department runs smoothly, that everyone knows what is going on at all times, and that the other Education staff members have everything they need to handle programs or animal encounters off and on grounds. I verify that there are enough docents to handle animals, which also consists of keeping track of those docents who are trained to handle certain animals and which docents that do not wish to handle certain animals, i.e snakes and lizards usually. I also schedule, coordinate, keep track of all Summer Programs. Using Excel to track phone numbers, allergies, and who will be assigned to what Summer class. I have to make sure Summer Camp Counselors have all materials they need to cover their lesson plans. My position is extremely fast paced and I have to be organized at all times. I work 3 to 4 days a week from 9am-4pm and sometimes I stay over until 6pm, but I cannot go over 29 hours a week.

I was a companion and caregiver for a completely dependant 34 year old male with Cerebral Palsy and Scoliosis. I worked 13 and 14 hour shifts overnight while he was sleeping. I was in my local 4-H group, The Energetics from 1996 through my senior year of High School. I worked my way up starting as the Activities Director to President all throughout my years active. Every year I was involved I held an office. One of my absolute proudest moments was holding the office of President.

Additional Information

I did volunteer work in the Summers of 1996 and 1997 and I cannot remember but I may have in 1998. Volunteered every Summer during High School at Wesselman Woods for kids Kindergarten to Fifth grade. I am excellent at putting portfolios, lesson plans, schedules, detailed notes. I am used to working in stressful, loud and busy places, and I LOVE talking and interacting with any age person.
