Intern, KNUST Transport Department Aug 2020 - Oct 2020

● Engaged in the daily servicing and replacement of parts of private cars owned by staff and walk-in customers such as replacement of oil filters, impeller pumps, transmission shafts, dampers, steering motor etc.

● Gained detailed hands-on experience on assembling and disassembling a petrol engine and was able to understand the different types of combustion engines (i.e. Compression Ignition Engines and Spark Ignition Engines).

● Participated in most test drive simulations to record and also check for irregularities, problems or other unwanted sounds from various vehicles before and after servicing as the case may be.

● Utilized a Diagnostic device (Autel) which was able to run diagnostics on a vehicle to scan for error codes or faults in the electrical system and also used to reprogram/troubleshoot to clear the error code of the vehicle.

● Learned how to set the camshaft fitting and timing of a car engine.

● Gained expertise in the replacement of various parts of car engines such as refitting of auxiliary pipes and setting the pushrod and rocker arm alignment, brake pads, spark plugs, fuel filters, fluid clutch pipe etc.

● Documented and took inventories of vehicle problems and already serviced vehicles from their drop cards to keep track of customer vehicles.

● Gained profound knowledge of installation of wires using schematic diagrams for the lights, horn, instrument cluster, etc within the truck

● Engaged in the installation of reservoir tanks, air hose, battery box, leaf spring suspension,front and rear axle, petrol tank, engine, cabin, tyres, in different assembly stations.

● Developed adequate knowledge in programming and troubleshooting trucks assembled to function with the ECU

● Engaged in testing of the braking system, high gear and low gear of the newly assembled truck and calibration of head lamp.

● Learnt how to use a vehicle scanner to diagnose fault in vehicles

● Developed adequate technical knowledge of car engines by servicing at least 4-5 cars a day during my apprenticeship.

● I was able to establish a small-scale cooking service with a friend to provide and deliver to students

(customers) around my hostel with a late night meal which consisted of Barbecue fried chicken wings and fried plantain with other side chops included, just from the comfort of my flat during the pandemic.

● It empowered me with the skills of budgeting, marketing and time management.
