COMPARISION OF DIFFERENT TECHNIQUES TO IMPROVE INPUT POWER FACTOR OF RECTIFIERS

Abstract: The electrical applications like electric traction, High Voltage DC transmission and all AC, DC conversion in industrial applications require power electronic conversions. During these conversions the relative angle between V & I are not in phase in case of rectifier loads, which increases burden on reactive power of the source, thus leading to reduction of input power factor. The main objective of this project is model circuit for input power factor improvement using a universal converter. Presently for AC-DC conversion conventional converters used. The traditional SCR’s are used. SCR’s requires triggering and commutation circuits, which leading to additional bulky in the system. It can be made simpler by the use of IGBT which triggering and commutation is done using gate pulse. A universal converter is modeled which employs bidirectional switch makes the input power factor improvement.In addition to it, comparison of different input power factor improvement techniques in rectifiers i.e. normal angle control, extinction angle, symmetric angle control and pulse width modulation are compared. A MATLAB simulation has been developed to simulate the system operation. Various simulation results are presented under steady state conditions and performance of AC/DC current is compared. For each input signal corresponding output waveforms are observed and recorded.

Minor Project:

Density based traffic light system with auto traffic signal transition for VIP vehicles/ ambulance

Abstract: It is important to know the road traffic density real time especially in metropolitan cities for signal control and effective traffic management. In recent years, video monitoring and surveillance systems have been widely used in traffic management. Traffic control is a very difficult task for traffic control department, especially in metro cities. The Project is designed to check the density of traffic in particular place and the information is conveyed to traffic control station. This project is designed with AT89S52 microcontroller. Three pairs of IR Tx-Rx are used here to indicate the density of the traffic.The module consists of a IR emitter and TSOP receiver pair. The high precision TSOP receiver always detects a signal of fixed frequency. Due to this, errors due to false detection of ambient light are significantly reduced.This project uses regulated 5V, 500mA power supply. 7805 three terminal voltage regulator is used for voltage regulation. Bridge type full wave rectifier is used to rectify the ac output of secondary of 230/12V step down transformer.
