Strong people skills, demonstrated by working with trainee engineers, coaching them to develop their skills. Enjoy working with people from different cultures and have excellent communication skills. Understanding of both geological and engineering terminology results in excellent understanding of rig operations and rationale behind them. Adept at interfacing with oil company representatives on a daily basis and other service / rig personnel. In addition to being a lead field engineer, Metrol selected some engineers from operations department, to work in the office for R&D when not offshore. Engineers that displayed inquisitive skills and who were regarded as dependable were selected. Metrol allocated myself to conduct component testing for R&D. WORK DUTIES
FIELD ENGINEER
Programming electronic tools including pressure and temperature gauges, transmitter stations, Metrol Firing Head, Metrol Sampler Actuator (MSA), Distributed Temperature Array (DTA), accelerometers, magnetometers, E-Line MAPs (eline deployed transmitter and receiver), ROV deployable sonars and surface deployable sonars. Also Building and pressure testing gauge carriers. Running gauge carriers in hole as well as fitting transmitter stations strategically to tubing. Connecting, testing and running sub-sea cabling. During well testing, continually monitor and critically assess pressures and temperatures in the well and pass data to client. Determine whether tester valve has opened/closed when commanded or if commands have failed. Relay the outcome of tester valve functions to test engineer as this is critical information during well testing. Once well test is completed and tools are brought to surface, download the pressure and temperature data then prepare pressure and temperature plots for client. Complete pressure and temperature reports with additional annotation of pressure and temperature graphs which requires an understanding of downhole activity both within the tubing string and annulus. Metrol also undertake well monitoring via wireline using an E-line acoustic transmitter. Operated this system in North Sea, South America and West Africa. Once job completed organise demobilisation of kit and sending back to UK. R &D COMPONENT TESTING
Experienced in working in R&D laboratory carrying out testing to identify components that can function in high temperature environments and identify the voltages and timeframe over which these parts can operate. Skilled in preparing electronic components for test, soldering them onto PCB boards, wiring the boards and connecting to test housings. Continual monitoring using electrical equipment such as LCRs and SMUs. Skilled at producing analytical reports for head of R&D, detailing how the components were performing or had performed. Was responsible for uploading all data to dedicated database pre assembly & post assembly of test boards and for managing the data collected and posting the final results of the tests. SCOPE OF WORK
Select components, typically capacitors and resistors for testing. Order parts and when they arrive, QC the components. Solder the parts to PCB boards then prepare for testing. This included washing, drying and baking boards. The boards would then require conformal coating, then mounting and wiring them inside test housings ready to be placed into test ovens. Whilst in test ovens, monitor component behaviour during temperature cycles and soak periods. If faults arose, troubleshoot and fault find to identify the problems, then work to find a solution. Periodically produce reports to show the change in behaviour or deterioration in performance over time. These reports are then presented to heads of electronics and R + D to decide if the parts will be of use in certain downhole tools. All information about the component gathered from tests and reports are then added to component database.
2006 – 2008 Baker Hughes, Production Quest, Dyce, Aberdeen LEAD FIELD ENGINEER
Lead Field engineer specialising in installation of permanent downhole gauges for completion wells. Using hands on engineering and electronic skills to install, deploy and operate real time downhole data gauges. This position was mainly based in the North Sea. I felt that the engineer position at Baker Hughes was limited in terms of career progression. A position arose at Metrol that allowed worldwide travel and an opportunity to further develop my skillset.
2005 – 2006 Schlumberger Oilfield UK Plc, Dyce, Aberdeen MWD FIELD SPECIALIST
My role was to carry out Measurement While Drilling in support of the Directional Driller. Downhole and surface sensors were required to be set up, calibrated then tested before running in hole. Once running in hole and drilling, continuous monitoring of the multiple MWD sources was pivotal in the operation to determine the position of the drill bit. Schlumberger drilling department had an employment drive due to high oil price. A position arose at Baker in completions that offered more stability. KEY ACHIEVEMENTS
Metrol gained a contract in UAE with significant future potential based upon my ability to push and articulate company products.
Metrol have history of producing new tools which requires field engineers to display initiative when new tools may not function as expected. Was the first engineer to successfully run Metrol’s prototype MCV tool. It had previously failed on three other jobs. Displayed knowledge and understanding to identify an anomaly in the coding and reprogrammed the tool which then ran successfully. Successfully carried this activity whilst under pressure, working alone with no support from the onshore R&D team. While working in the UAE, identified a time lag issue with data from a high temperature gauge. Having a geology degree made me aware that this could potentially result in data being misaligned to the incorrect reservoir horizon. Liaised with the onshore R&D team to identify a successful resolution. Metrol were sub contracted in the UAE through another company who were providing DST tools. The DST tools failed on 3 consecutive runs. Metrol had recently developed new high temperature rated DST tools. Following my intervention, the contractor contracted Metrol’s DST tools for future campaigns. Set the Metrol company record for time spent at a rig site in 2019 at sixty-seven consecutive days.
