1. Employer National Social Security Authority

Position: OSH Inspector of Factories-Mechanical Engineering

Reporting to: Principal Inspector of Factories

Duration: April 2013 to date

Reason for wanting to leave: Career Advancement

Duties:

Inspect and commission factories, buildings, machinery, equipment and installations

Investigate health and safety related complaints and workplace accidents to prevent reoccurrences and recommend prosecution where appropriate

Conduct inspection of materials, workmanship, and safety of boilers and unfired pressure vessels during construction and installation and during operation and maintenance

Ratify competency of certain designated people in industry as prescribed legally e.g. Responsible persons

Conduct training for boiler operators’ course

Approve new factory plans, additions or alterations

Inspection of elevators, lifting equipment and pressure vessels in general including electrical installations

Provide expert advice on various stakeholder technical committees on OSH e.g. Standards Association of Zimbabwe to ensure that OHS issues are effectively addressed

Ensuring efficient operations and running of installed boilers to adopt to changes in demand for the steam reticulation systems

Responsible for quality control checks of all manufactured products and site installations according to pressure vessel manufacturing codes, welding and quality control standards

Position Assistant Engineer

Duties:

Inspection of water tube boilers

Assisted senior engineers during outage to manage sub-contractors, identify repairs for Boiler bullnose, economizer hopper and identify maintenance activity for next outage

Performed preventive maintenance and repairs to the turbine generator, conveyor system and other auxiliary equipment

Ensuring the operation of the power plant in accordance with established rules and regulations

Determining design specifications and maintenance requirements of new equipment

Planning and scheduling work to be done during the bi-monthly and annual shutdown for all sections of the mill

4. Employer Border Timbers International (BTI)

assisting maintenance crews in repair/replacement of plant equipment

exposure to planned maintenance systems( work orders and job cards, computer based maintenance systems)

conducted an investigation of failures on the finger jointing machine which was the basis of final year project titled “design and implementation of a hybrid maintenance strategy for BTI”

ACHIEVEMENTS

Part of team that carried out Hippo Valley Mill rehabilitation at a cost of $21million from January to June 2010. Included works on diffuser, boilers and spray pond piping.

Motivated for procurement of a new compressor after carrying out a compressed air study for the mill which greatly improved reliability of supply of compressed air

Constructed Excel tool for the dosing of water treatment chemicals for the combined 371tons/steam boilers at Hippo Valley Estates

Completed the Profeeds project for the design, manufacture, installation and commissioning of a 3ton/hr coal fired steam boiler and 300m steam line for the new plant on time and budget whilst attached to Cochrane Engineering
