An accurate and real time estimation of people in a shopping mall can provide valuable information for managers. In recent years, this field has seen many advances, but the solutions have restrictions people must be moving, the background must be simple, or the image resolution must be high. However, real scenes always include both moving and stationary human beings, the background may be complicated, and most videos in a visual surveillance system have a relatively low resolution. The input image or video frame is first scanned by a detection window at various scales and locations. This step is important because the sizes and locations of the human objects in the input image or video are not known a priori. Each window is then encoded by the proposed human object descriptor and classified human vs non human using a discriminative method such as the SVM classifier.
