Used Matlab and Simulink to load gasoline engine component control models into Arduino computers using Simulink Coder translation to C++. Designed and developed water-cooled single phase controlled rectifier and controls and software for 300V 300 Amp dc alternator field static exciter. This included SCR gate drive electronics design and PWM controls to the gates, from schematic generation using Orca, to board procurement, embedded TMS software creation from scratch, CAN bus interfacing to controls, and development and successful implementation of the product. Modeled power electronics using Matlab and Simulink. Developed motor and alternator test procedures.

Served as concept designer of maglev vehicle propulsion and auxiliary power systems.

Designed rotary transformer. Developed multi-machine test arrangements to provide various levels of dc and ac power at various voltages and frequencies. Participated in evaluation of manufacturing of cryogenic SSC magnets (Superconducting Supercollider, a $6B proposal that the DOE started and later cancelled). Invented cartridge type brush holder to reduce dc motor maintenance difficulties. Developed ac motor test facilities. Installed 1500 kilowatt inverter for testing and performed required controllability tests. Supervised many co-op students. Developed thermal models of dc and ac traction motors. Analyzed magnetic pull problems in single-bearing cantilevered motors. Setup high speed cycling tests for motors. Further developed train simulation software to the point where no locomotive sale would be made without first running its data through the simulator.

Served as a respected technical resource for many projects, was matrixed into virtually all important projects in the engineering department.

Lead engineering team to design battery-fed alternator cranking of a 4500 hp diesel engine, including dc/dc battery boost converter. Developed finite element analysis software for electromagnetic analysis of unusual apparatus. Improved software models of motor thermal performance using Matlab and Simulink. Developed software test plan (STP) and software test descriptions (STD's) per MIL-498 for control software of a power controller in a military vehicle upgrade. Interfaced to software system requirements via DOORS software for card level, test stand level and vehicle levels. Visited client many times to coordinate system requirements and generation of test plans and descriptions. Scripted test procedures for technicians per test descriptions, including testing for all known messages on all vehicle CAN buses. Ran and qualified software in systems integration lab at card test fixture level (manual tests) and automatic test stand level. Developed macro-based tools for Excel and Word to make real time charting and automated documentation possible. Developed Systems Integration Lab. Conferred with individual software engineers to smooth out C code insufficiencies. Developed consumer electrical products related to air care and cleaning. Authored data acquisition applications. Designed a future product powered by fuel cells (3 megawatt PEM fuel cell propulsion system, including study of controllability and power converter configurations) Co-chaired industry/government committee to author the "Railroad Technology R & D Roadmap" for the US Department of Energy, submitted to Congress. Witnessed testing of drive/motor/compressor systems for the Department of Energy. Served as technical advisor to DOE technical managers on various fuel cell development projects of an electromechanical nature.
