HIV Outreach and Testing Counselor

Recruits individuals from high-risk populations to participate in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) prevention programs and HIV, STIs and Hepatitis C testing, counseling and treatment, including but not limited to individuals living with addiction.
Conducts community HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs) testing and prevention counseling at various outreach events and venues (e.g., neighborhoods of high incidence of criminal activity; non-for-profit organizations providing supportive services for our clients; residential/outpatient rehabilitation facilities; transitional housing for chronically homeless men and/or drug and alcohol-free; and, churches).
Conducts Hepatitis C testing.
Participates in community events and activities targeting the agency populations of focus.
oDistributes condoms, brochures, and awareness messages.
oEncourages HIV and STI testing.
oPerforms HIV and STI testing, counseling and education.
Visits community partners promoting the agency’s mental health and substance use treatment services and fostering future collaboration and partnerships.
Helps facilitating linkage to care, housing, and other HIV/AIDS related prevention and care/ treatment services.
Collects and enters data related to outreach, education and testing activities.
Attends all required trainings, workshops, and meetings.
Serves as Peer Support Specialist under the Behavioral Health Department for individuals with substance use disorders (SUD) and/or co-occurring substance use and mental health disorders (COD).
oSupports clients, providing peer counseling based on personal experiences related to recovery, and develops meaningful and trusting relationships with clients.
oHelps participants understand and employ recovery strategies.
oProvides transportation to clients. Picks clients to and from the agency for their scheduled appointments.
oAssists clients under opiod treatment services getting their medications.
oIn both individual and group sessions, helps clients identify and combat negative self-talk and overcome fears by providing hope through shared experiences, literature, media, and etc.
