Resume:

SUMMARY

I am a retired tenured professor with ** years experience shepherding graduate students through development of a research question, design of a study, data collection, data analysis, writing, and defending their thesis or dissertation. This resume describes the skills that I bring to sessions on writing. I also describe (a) my professional experience at 3 different universities, (b) how and why I founded the developmental psychology doctoral program at University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) and (c) the outcome of their graduate training as reflected by where they are now employed.

WRITING SKILLS

Adept at giving feedback about writing without threatening the student.

Points out areas of major difficulties in the writing and how those sections may be improved.

I use parts of the writing without major difficulties as examples of better writing.

Show student how relatively minor changes can improve the flow of writing.

EXPERIENCE

Assistant Professor of Psychology, University of Cincinnati (1972-1977)

Associate Professor of Psychology, University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa (1978-1981)

Professor of Psychology UAB (1984-2001)

Director Division of Psychology, Sparks Center for Developmental and Learning Disorders, UAB (1981-1997)

I was Founder and Director of the Doctoral Program in Developmental Psychology, at UAB (1992-1997). I noticed that the number of UAB faculty interested in Life-Span Development far exceeded the 5 Developmental Psychologists on the faculty of the Department of Psychology.

To increase the number of faculty and make the program more interdisciplinary, I recruited additional faculty from other disciplines with interests in human development. These departments included Pediatrics, Computer and Information Sciences, Epidemiology, Medical Sociology, Public Health, Physiology and Biophysics, Education, and several other disciplines with faculty doing developmental research.

The Developmental Psychology Program at UAB has now graduated more than 50 Ph.D.s. who are employed by universities, private industry, government agencies, public private schools, or are in private practice.

EDUCATION

Ph.D. Experimental Child Psychology, 1972

University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana
