Phlebotomy/Venipuncture Technician

•Obtains and labels requested blood specimens from all units. Ensures that blood specimens are delivered to the laboratory promptly.

•Obtains daily blood draw list from laboratory; makes sure proper labels are aUached.

•Performs venipuncture on all pa0ents for specialized blood tests and analyses (e.g., FBS, serum chemistry, blood cultures).Verifies correct pa0ent by checking name on blood draw list with name on pa0ent's wrist band before beginning procedure. Explains procedure to pa0ent before beginning to help calm pa0ent anxie0es.

•In the ICU's, draws blood specimens from arterial lines as requested.

•Labels all blood specimens and delivers to the appropriate sec0on of the laboratory.

•Records 0me of blood draw or any problems on the blood draw list; informs responsible unit personnel of any specimens that could not be obtained due to lack of suitable vein.

•Ensures medically asep0c technique and/or isola0on precau0ons are maintained while performing job func0on.

•Performs all phlebotomy-related du0es as requested by supervisors.

•Maintains established departmental policies and procedures, objec0ves, quality assurance program, safety, environmental, and infec0on control standards.

•Assessment, treatment and pa0ent care responsibili0es are delivered with a knowledge of pa0ent growth and development and are appropriate to the ages of the pa0ents served.

•Collected, disinfected, and transported all infec0ous laboratory waste from assigned laboratories according to established opera0ng procedures.

•Disposed of surgical specimens stored in the morgue on a weekly basis.

•Maintained viewing area of the morgue in a clean and organized condi0on and controlled the monitoring of all associated supplies.

•Maintained weekly inventory of amputated limbs and fetuses stored in the morgue to ensure appropriate dispensa0on (either burial or disposal).
