NURSE PRACTITIONER EXPERIENCE
Nashville Rescue Mission Clinics: Nurse Practitioner-volunteer at the Nashville Rescue Mission Clinic 1993 – Fall 2009 supervised by Dr. William Skinner and Dr. Thomas Patten
ProHealth Rosa Parks Community Clinic (Serving the homeless population and the Rosa Parks community) Fall 2011 – March 2012
Inspiration: The reason I became a nurse practitioner was to work with the homeless. I became burdened to help them during the years I worked downtown at the Bureau of Medicaid from 19891990. The homeless were everywhere downtown, staggering across the streets, sleeping in doorways, or sitting on sidewalks. One homeless man had a generalized seizure and fell just in front of me one day. My heart was moved with compassion and I went to the Nashville Rescue Mission and began volunteer service in the clinic there. I entered the Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) Program at Vanderbilt to become an FNP to better serve the homeless. While working on the MSN, I volunteered as an RN in the clinics and at the shelter teaching health promotion.
After graduation in 1993 I began practice as an FNP and provided primary health care for homeless men in the main building during the first years at the mission. Later I worked in the clinic with homeless women and children in the Family Life Center. Referrals were made as appropriate for each individual. Spiritual care was a focus in this faith-based medical ministry.
The reason for leaving this practice that spanned close to 20 years was that the clinic closed for renovation in August, 2009. We set up a temporary clinic in a room at the Hope Center but later that also was closed. The decision was made in early 2010 that the mission-run clinic would not reopen.
Pro-Health contracted to provide full-time clinical services.
