Personal Statement

My name is Christie A. Alentado and I was born in 1979 in Miami, Florida. Growing up in a bilingual community, I realized at a young age that the ability to communicate well within a diverse population is integral and imperative to provide for outstanding relationships. Excelling in communication goes far beyond mastery of languages; tone of voice, hand gestures, and facial expressions all contain valuable information that must be properly processed and utilized. Things that may seem insignificant can in fact be the most important pieces of information and knowing how to correctly prioritize and filter that information is of the utmost importance. I have always been enamored with dolphins. Ever since I was young, I have been fixated by dolphins and their ability to communicate with people. There have even been instances where dolphins have been proven to be helpful for people with certain illnesses and, in my opinion, I believe that they can sense levels of comfort/discomfort in humans. I love how intelligent, social and playful they are and the sounds they make when "talking" to each other. They seem to have a natural charismatic and empathetic character to them that I have always admired. Their special ability to work together and coordinate within large groups is an incredible trait. With that in mind, I have always strived for that level of understanding and efficiency in all aspects of my life. It is because of their gregarious and benevolent nature that I have learned to see past my own flaws and follies and use my strengths to better understand myself and those around me.
