Master Thesis

Flexible compensation strategy for voltage Source Converter under unbalanced and harmonic condition based on a Hybrid-Virtual Impedance method”

The tasks include modeling of network components with DigSilent Powerfactory, Matlab/ Simulink and design the appropriate control structure of the Hybrid –Virtual impedance method, Perform the harmonic/Power quality analysis,Frequency sweep analysis and dynamic RMS/EMT simulation.

The main objective of this thesis work is used to control the harmonic output impedance of the VSC under unbalanced and harmonic condition. There are two strategies incorporated in thesis work are

Proposed strategy (Hybrid Feed forward – Feedback Virtual Impedance method)

Existing method ( Single Feed forward or Feedback)

For the objective of the thesis the control structure of HFF-VI is constructed in DigSilent Powerfactory. The block mainly consists of a reduced resonant controller, compensation factor, grid impedance. The input to the blocks is feed forward voltage of the Point of common coupling and output current of the VSC. By varying the cut-off frequency, bandwidth, simultaneously varying the magnitude response of feed forward voltage and feedback current of the VSC to control harmonic output impedance of the VSC in a wide range. Coming to the second method SFF. The block consists of the bandpass filter and the inputs of either Feed forward voltage or Feedback current. Here we vary any one of the magnitude response feed forward or feedback. Comparing both the results the above method has no overmodulation, instability problems. But SFF has overmodulation effects.

Dynamic RMS / EMT Simulation – DigSilent Powerfactory.

Modeling Slack generators and PV generators with AC power sources powered by battery & fuel cell /Electrolyzer are connected to the hydrogen storage.

Design of the appropriate control structure to represent the power electronic converter.

Investigations on the control of Electrical Energy systems with increased integration of renewable energy

3

Effective communication skills both verbally and written

Fast and productive relationships with people in the form environment.

At the same time working independently and motivating a team to lead. The testing of the DSL modules(HFF-VI and SFF) in 30 wind turbine each having a rated power of 1,5Mw and necessary controllers with fully rated converter and finally connected to the 110Kv External grid with the unbalanced system. The following analysis is done:

Load flow analysis, Dynamic RMS/EMT simulation, Harmonic/ Power quality and Frequency sweep analysis.

The excepted outputs are checking the voltage at busbars, network impedances at busbars, voltage harmonics distortion, current harmonic distortion, the harmonic output impedance of the VSC with compensation and without compensation.
