Team Member, Spot Repair Sprayer Mercedes Benz, MBUSI,
My first position was working on the polish line duties included searching for defects on units on a moving production line.
When a defect was found I was to repair it if possible. That would include but not limited to sanding, polishing, touch ups and cutting sealer.
Also working final inspection. Duties include inspecting the whole car for any defects including dents. To also repair anything that could be fixed quickly as not have the line stopped for very long and to keep the units moving forward.
Also checking repair tickets for anything that was written up and not repaired or stamped off on.
Clearing out issues on the computer and making sure to scan each unit as they came across the line in the booth.
Sending units to spot repair that could not be repaired online.
Calling dent doctors to repair dents found on units.
Inspecting any repairs made by spot repair and making sure there was no over spray and a good color match.
My next position was working in spot repair
In this position I learned how to repair major defects on units
This position included identifying the issues and a plan on how to repair them
This included but was not limited to
Hand sanding the defect out
Cutting sealer off/ repainting
Blocking out craters
Knowing what grade of sandpaper to use
Knowing what temp to heat which panels to dry sprayed areas and not warp the panel
If needed also spraying/ applying primer or flash primer to area
If the defect went into the Ecoat reapplying Ecoat then primer and heating so that I could then hand spray unit
Knowing base coat colors
Using and mixing clear coat
Color matching to perfection
Sanding sprayed area making sure color match during the whole process and polishing out the area making sure there are no remaining scratches nor haze and overspray.
Using various hand tools as needed
Using large polishers with wooly pads as well as smaller polisher with waffle pads
Also working on show cars
Masking, taping, foil and plastic to protect areas of unit depending on the process.
The main objective was no matter how far we had to break down the layers 3
of clear coat, base coat, primer and Ecoat to be able to build the area back up and make the repair as perfect as possible with no defects, groves, dips or dents and the color match to be perfect as well plus laying the clear coat correctly so as to make it look like it was never touched and would match the rest of the paint that was sprayed by the robots.
I was lucky enough to move very quickly in this company from polish line as a temp to final inspection and then to an off line job in spot repair as a temp which was unheard of all in 18 months’ time. I was hired as a full time MBUSI employee right at 2 years and consider myself very lucky.
Of all the jobs that I have had I consider this to be the best!
I loved what I did for this company and felt like I was truly making a difference. I took lots of pride in my work.
