University of Tulsa, Research Assistant, Polymer Engineering, ACS-PRF#60303 grant, Tulsa, OK 08/2017-08/2020 BECO Engineering SRL Santa Cruz, Bolivia

Process Engineer (Design) 02/2016-07/2017

Brought to successful completion various design projects, implemented design templates, followed up projects during construction phase, setup simulations in Hysys v8.2, assisted clients in the decision-making process.

• Increased by 50% LPG transfer capacity by changing from intermittent to online blending a system of C3 and C4 pumps.

• Modified a baffle type 3-phase well testing separator into a bucket-weir type, under API 12J and prepared an operation chart, to process 40 million SCFD of natural gas for export. Successful operation as per design confirmed.

• Designed a revamp of a GLP tank farm for a 20,000-bpd oil refinery, performed intensive work using Hysys and Flarenet to store natural gas liquids, resulting in a safer design than a previous one by considering fire scenarios

• Reported the cause of an ammonia tank leak from a urea & ammonia plant, saving the insurance company money. Saudi Aramco Total Refining & Petrochemicals SATORP Jubail, Saudi Arabia Design Engineer 08/2013-12/2015

Worked at a world-class new 400,000 bpd ($15 billion investment) oil refinery, during start up and operation. Successfully achieved the design and execution of more than 100 small refinery projects (MOC) in the Project Department.

• Implemented a study of 40,000 bpd fuel oil transport using a gasoline pipeline, from the refinery to shore facilities, 22 km away from the refinery to transport fuel oil produced in excess, saving the company $15 million a year.

• Saved 10,000 bpd of Light Straight Naphtha (LSR) by studying the implementation of a new isomerization unit to convert LSR into a more valuable refinery product that could be used in the gasoline pool to be sold as gasoline.

• Gained safety in the sales gas metering station design by 100%, by showing how could pipe integrity be compromised.

• Performed the material selection, piping design, bill of materials, process control & instrumentation schemes, P&IDs, and Isometrics to expedite the refinery MOC project execution, resulting in a reduction of thousands of man-hours.

• Designed, managed, and followed up, from grass roots to commissioning, various projects as part of the refinery startup, such as: sales gas filter installation; light coker gas filter; caustic soda injection system; wash water injection system; pour point depressant injection system; implementation of API 582 seal plans; and molten sulfur pump electric tracing. INESCO Engineering & Construction Santa Cruz, Bolivia Lead Process Engineer (Design) 09/2011-03/2013

Led drafters and engineers I and II, liaising with different project sections, to develop the process engineering from basic engineering to detailed engineering for the Total-Repsol-Petrobras JIP Natural Gas Compressor Station Expansion Project

($50 million project) to increase its capacity from 28 to 34 million SCMD for natural gas export.

• Reduced 1 month of total project time by identifying and designing early during the engineering validation, necessary equipment and piping that should be identified later in the field during construction.

• Reduced design time in calculation time from hours to minutes, by automating design spreadsheets and templates for sizing a custody transfer metering station, increasing company knowhow.

• Led a team from a local refinery in preparation to build the new Isomerization unit to upgrade LSR to gasoline, organized the workflow and pinpoint flaws and infrastructure needed to revamp the refinery gasoline pool.

• Saved about $1 million by performing a Hysys simulation to predict the gas flow to size a gas compressor.

• Saved $20 million in project time and product sales by performing a hot oil availability study to supply heat to the new isomerization unit that invalidated a former study that claimed hot oil capacity was enough. IVANHOE ENERGY Inc. Houston, TX

Process Engineer - HTL 10/2008-03/2011

Served as the focal point on the development of the HTL (Heavy To Light) upgrading technology, designed to cost effectively process heavy oil in the field and produce a stable upgraded synthetic oil that meets pipeline requirements.

• Assured a 95% range of validity of the sand rate, a key process design parameter to scaleup, by implementing an online heat balance to assess the rate at which sand (heat carrier) circulates in the reactor-regenerator loop.

• Reduced clogging in 90 % in the quench tower’s trays from constant clogging to none, by modifying the quench tower trays to avoid tray coke buildup, that plugged the trays after about 6 hours after every run startup.

• Saved 50% of torch oil usage and assured steady state by implementing an online heat balance to calculate heat losses to estimate the rate of torch oil, resulting in a steady coke burning at the regenerator.

• Setup an alarm configuration in the DCS to reduce operator exposure to highly explosive fluids and high temperatures. ABB Lummus Technology (today Lummus Technology) Houston, TX Process Engineer 11/2007-10/2008

Executed a grass root Delayed Coker and gas plant design project. Reported to the Process Engineering Director

• Completed Hysys simulation, equipment design, sizing, and datasheet generation for United Refining Company URC

• Started quench model to reduce time spent in quenching coke drum bed by solving numerically a system of equations. Foster Wheeler USA Corporation (today Wood) Houston, TX Process Engineer (Design) 09/2005-11/2007

Executed grass root and revamp projects of Delayed Coker and gas plant design. Reported to the Process Lead Engineer.

• Saved hundreds of barrels of product by modeling the coker drum overhead decay vapor rate using Hysys dynamics.

• Completed equipment design, hydraulic calculations, sizing and datasheet generation of pumps, vessels, lines, towers, and instruments. Prepared PFDs, and PI&Ds, permissive/interlock descriptions, dynamic simulations in PRO II and Hysys.
