SELECTED ACCOMPLISHMENTS
10 years of civil litigation experience in downtown Toronto including medical malpractice / personal injury claims (plaintiff and defence)
Extensive involvement in claims handling and claims management in every area of practice including medical / healthcare liability-related claims, through the lens of lawyer professional liability (negligence)
Assisted LawPRO (mid-1990s) in retiring the $180M deficit, arising from the ‘insurance crisis’ of the late 1980s / early 1990s when the lawyer’s insurance program was overseen by the Benchers of the Law Society of Upper Canada
Seamlessly integrated the claims team into the corporate insurance business model
Spearheaded the overhaul of the deductible collection process in the late 1990s when LawPRO migrated to windows-based claim handling software including preparation of training materials and conducting training sessions
Headed up the initiative that saw the deductible collection process migrate from a discipline to a suspension process. This involved extensive discussions with the Law Society of Upper Canada, the then Vice President Claims and CEO of LawPRO leading up to the change from a discipline to a suspension process, and the creation of a new By-Law and procedures once the new process was approved (including most recently an appeal mechanism). The immediate impact of this change from discipline to suspension also facilitated the recovery of a very large outstanding deductible receivable that was virtually uncollectable under the discipline process
Headed up the initiative that saw the creation of a secure portal through which claims defence counsel can communicate with LawPRO claims professionals on a file-specific basis. This involved partnering with our IT Department, members of the LawPRO Executive, the LawPRO claims team and defence counsel
Assisted the Executive Vice President with the annual reinsurance placements for the Excess and Clash programs. This involved preparation of the narrative that accompanied the package circulated by our insurance broker and meetings with the broker and reinsurers
In response to escalating legal fees, I headed up the first ever alternative fee arrangement pilot project in the claims department by preparing the Request for Proposals, reviewing the Proposals submitted by the law firms, monitoring the pilot over its 36 month duration, analysing the data from that project and, due to its success, implementing a second alternative fee arrangement project in 2017
Spearheaded a major and ongoing project involving the creation of new claims handling software and work reallocation processes in conjunction with our IT Department and many other stakeholders from various departments in the company
Assisted the Executive Vice President annually with the claims section of his annual report to the Board of Directors, and present the annual claims report for my department to the Board of Directors
Assisted our Finance Department annually with audit inquiries from our external auditor and meet directly with our auditors on an annual basis to review any changes to claims handling procedures
Managing the TitlePLUS title insurance claims portfolio for a one year period in which I successfully implemented the first subrogation / recovery program
While seconded to the Law Society of Upper Canada, I reviewed the various processes and procedures involving the enforcement of orders and undertakings given by members to the Law Society, and prepared a report with recommendations that were accepted and successfully implemented
Effectively dealing with a number of highly sensitive HR-related issues over the years in conjunction with various members of LawPRO’s senior management team
Mentoring and coaching many employees to achieve and exceed their goals
As Vice President, Primary Professional Liability Claims, I acted as LawPRO’s liaison to the provincial and federal judicial appointment committees, regularly providing claims information of judicial candidates
Hosting a number of offsite educational meetings for our external defence counsel
