The main responsibility of the juvenile detention officer is the maintenance of security and safety within a correctional facility for individuals under 18 years of age. To ensure that this is done, the juvenile detention officer monitors the youths and carries out physical head counts to ensure that all the youth in the facility are accounted for at any given time. Security of the youth and the officer’s peers is ensured by carrying out safety checks on locks, doors and alarms. The juvenile detention officer also carries out regular checks of the rooms of the youths and their personal belongings. He maintains records such as release and intake forms as well as shift reports and juvenile data. These records must be accurate and well-recorded.

Observed the court room and waited for court paperwork to insure correct information was provided, if a detainee is being released at the soonest break or recess in court, I would go to unit one and fax the paperwork to booking and then call booking to let them know I was faxing the paperwork to ensure the detainee was released in a timely manner.
