A logistics practitioner in supply chain management, with a career trajectory that has been inspired by the inter connection of the different processes involved in domestic and international logistics. Responsibilities

Responsibilities

• Processing of shipping line documentation that govern container movement and applicable terms like bill of lading, manifest correctors, collect confirmations, change of destinations, RIB’s facilitated through ensuring efficiency in daily liaisons with colleagues and other stakeholders in the value chain like suppliers, at every port of load where MSC has footprints (well over 493 offices in 155 countries).

• Receipt and detailed evaluation of other required documentation for release of cargo upon arrival: customs documents (bill of entries, ce70 and ce61, rebate certificates), the original bills of lading as received by consignee from supplier, cargo dues, commercial invoices, packing lists and others.

• Facilitating compliance to applicable laws and regulations by shippers by expediting provision of necessary documentation to international governing bodies e.g South 2

African Revenue Services, South African Police Services and liaison with clients upon incidents common in the shipping/logistics value chain like detentions and theft.

• Affording clients contingency measures for challenges that impede the shipping process like sink holes or congestions at port of destination, to ensure that consignments make expected time of arrival as well as try keep any resulting added costs to a minimum.

• Planning, expedition and overseeing release procedure of consignments to consignee upon arrival of the cargo train and the rail back of empties to Durban after they're turned in from the consignee.

• Monitoring container movement from arrival date in the country to receiving it back from the consignee offloading cargo and handling of issues that arise in the process, e.g. inspections of containers found to have damaged cargo and handling of any claims.

• Raising demurrage invoices for containers (those not brought back in on time).

• Maintenance of good relationships and building rapport with other stakeholders in the value chain, namely, Gabcon, Botswana Unified Revenue Services, Transnet and subsequent monitoring of procedure on their end to ensure efficiency (e.g. clients containers released on time, collected from clients on time and railed back to Durban on time), adherence to grounding procedure, safety issues, documentation issues, tracking issues and many others.

Key Achievements;

• Provided recommendations that facilitated the bringing back of clients that had left. I performed extensive research on their shipping needs, grievances and challenges with visitations to clients premises, created a volume tracker database to statistically analyze relevant data in an initiative to find a solution to the dwindling volumes problem that was experienced.

• Successful training of release assistants as well as mentorship on professional growth and advancement.

• Successful management over a period of the Francistown office when the small staff complement was incapacitated which resulted in being subsequently tasked with remote supervision of procedure there.

Key achievements;

I came up with a cost-effective fuel monitoring system that was aimed at ensuring responsible fuel usage (accounting for every drop used, minimizing and eliminating wastage) and timeous ordering of fuel for the trucks.

Responsibilities

I moved through the Warehouse & Clearing and Administration departments for purposes of being conversant with as much of the procedures in the value chain as I could and was tasked with;

• Preparing documents for customs clearing at the border using both the EDI

(South African) and Asycuda (Botswana) systems.

• Preparing the necessary documentation for exports.

• Bond clearance at Botswana Unified Revenue Services.

• Ensuring timely collection of cargo from different suppliers in Johannesburg for delivery to customers in Botswana.

• Expedition of warehouse procedure, i.e. receipt, put away, store and picking as well as maintaining the accompanying records for all consignments e.g. waybills (receiving and dispatch), distribution plans, tally sheets (loading and offloading), stack cards (by commodity and by shipment), physical inventory count sheets, weekly and monthly reports that include, inventory, loss & claim, commodity status etc.

• Handling any queries customers might have regarding the company`s transportation services.

• Assisted in preparing payroll for the employees monthly.

• Ensured that Sacu permits, Ba permits, and registration of the trucks is up to date.

I worked in the Industrialization Support Services Division and was part of a team responsible for implementing projects such as

• Special support program for the clothing and textile industry aimed at subsidizing employee salaries to ensure their retention by companies in the field during the recession.

• I also wrote a research paper on Project Management; Bridging the gap between theory and practice. The paper among other things explored the differences between the theoretical aspect of project management, and what is actually practiced in the corporate world.
