PEOPLE MANAGEMENT, LEADERSHIP AND TEAM/SKILLS DEVELOPMENT AND HUMAN RESOURCES

I have been in a position of leading a group of people with different cultures and ages during my management period in Mpumalanga. That taught and gave me experience in managing people. I had a winning team with good working relations due to the following aspects

I used policies, rules and regulations in managing the team to avoid personalization.

In achieving targets, performance management system was used and communicated with the team on time.

Team building was used to build and motivate staff and address challenges within the unit.

I used open door policy in my management and also interacted with the team on regular intervals. This helped me to get an understanding of the individual skills, abilities and strength/weaknesses.

Coaching, mentoring counselling in developing skills.

I involved the team in the drafting of policies to encourage them to be involved in policy development.

TIME MANAGEMENT

Being a manager in a finance environment equipped me in understanding of the importance of understanding policies and procedures. I am meticulous and accurate with the ability to work under extreme pressure. I properly plan my work and prioritize. When working under pressure and towards meeting deadlines I work closely with my team and delegate responsibility not accountability. I put extra hours and take some work home if I cannot finish it in the office. I motivate my team in going extra mile. When working after hours I motivate the team by creating a conducive working environment.

STAKEHOLDER RELATIONS

At Legal Aid Board I was interacting with different stakeholders and had a responsibility of building relationship with them. In 2003 I was amongst the first Administration Managers to be appointed in the Justice Centers in the whole country. I had to make the community and community leaders to understand the role of the office and made sure that we retain our clients. We had to build a relationship with the courts around Nelspruit and also the Department of Justice. Justice Centers have a corporate image in all their offices; I was responsible for maintaining good relations with our suppliers of furniture and vehicles.

At the Provincial Treasury, I was communicating with other department’s management including political parties. Good relations were very important because we were doing presentations to the parliament, SCOPA and Cabinet Lekgotla. Doing financial presentations to politicians some with non-financial background need one to be very convincing and be able to answer questions imposed to her.

SELF DEVELOPMENT

I improved my academic qualification by attending short courses to maintain high quality leadership standards. I challenged myself by expanding personal comfort zone by acquiring new expertise and skills relevant to my job.

PROBLEM SOLVING

As a manager I do not have a problem in solving problems within the organization and those of my team members. If there are personal differences amongst the staff, I consult with them and we solve the problem amicably. If I noticed that one of my team members is not performing as expected I consult with the individual and provide mentoring or counselling if needed.

In the Justice Centre I implemented internal controls which assisted the office in obtaining unqualified audit opinion in the years I was a manager in the office. Qualification is a challenge facing many organizations and it takes a skilled and a dedicated person to work with the team to obtain an unqualified report.
