I joined L.T.M.M. College & General Hospital on 1/2/1999 for my Post-graduate course in Anaesthesia. It is a 1460 bedded university teaching tertiary municipal general hospital and has all the basic and super-speciality services. The institute being at the junction of the Eastern and the Western express highway has a busy accident and Trauma Unit and 24 hours EMS services. It has a heavy inpatient and outpatient load. The department of anaesthesia has around 70-80 operations per day.

• Work up management and follow up of cases.

• Assisting seniors in care of high-risk patients and surgical ICU patients.

• Emergency duties: attending all types of emergencies.

• Attending and examining patients in anaesthesia OPD.

• During the last two years, involved in supervising the work of junior residents in pre-operative assessments, OPD, and SICU.

Junior Resident – I

In my first year of residency I worked in the following operation theatres viz: General Surgery, Orthopaedics, ENT & Ophthalmology, and Urology & Gynaecology. I was under supervised training. I was taught the basics in anaesthesia, airway management, cardio pulmonary cerebral resuscitation, anaesthesia equipments, drugs, general anaesthesia & regional anaesthesia techniques. I actively contributed to the department academic programmes and inter departmental clinical meetings. Junior Resident - II

In my second year of residency, I worked in Obstetrics, Plastic surgery operation theatres and also in super-speciality operation theatres viz: cardiovascular thoracic surgery, paediatric surgery and neurosurgery. After passing my internal assessment examination, I was promoted as a registrar and I managed routine and emergency cases (ASA I & II) independently and was supervised for superspeciality and high risk cases. I learnt techniques such as central venous cannulation, arterial cannulation, tracheostomies and nerve blocks. I started working on my dissertation simultaneously. Junior Resident - III

In my final year of residency, I was exposed to intensive care and trauma care and continued to work in basic specialities in rotation. I continued to manage most of the cases independently and supervised junior residents while on emergency duty. I also took lectures for undergraduate students and my junior colleagues. I completed my dissertation titled:

“comparative study of ondansetron,tramadol and pethidine to reduce the intensity and incidence of shivering in regional anaesthesia.” I appeared for my M.D. (Anaesthesia) examination and was successful at the first attempt. During my three years of residency, my on call duty rota was 1 in 3.

Lecturer

After passing my M.D. exams, I joined as a lecturer in L.T.M.M. College & General Hospital. I managed cases independently during both routine and 9

emergency hours. As a lecturer I am exposed to hepatobiliary surgery, joint replacement surgery, spine surgery, acute postoperative pain management. During my emergency, I was the sole consultant on call in the campus and had to take independent decisions to manage surgical and trauma cases. I also actively participated in various teaching programmes organised by the department. I also managed live and cadaveric donor kidney transplants under senior’s supervision. I also managed trauma and surgical emergencies in emergency service centre (EMS), along with mass casualities like train accidents and other disasters.

TEACHING EXPERIENCE:

In the last two years of my residency at the L.T.M.Gen.Hospital & L.T.M.M. College, I was involved in teaching the junior residents, undergraduates and paramedics, the basics of anesthetic techniques, drug administration and patient monitoring.

L.T.M.G hospital is the regional centre for demonstration and teaching the basics of cardio pulmonary resuscitation with the aid of simulators to resident doctors and paramedics. During the last year of my residency I was part of the training team and during this period I gave hands on training to paramedics under the supervision of senior professors.

RESEARCH PROJECTS:

“Comparative Study of Ondansetron, Tramadol and Pethidine to Reduce the Intensity and Incidence of Shivering in Regional Anaesthesia.” This research was undertaken at the L.T.M.G. Hospital & L.T.M.M. College, Bombay, India when I was resident postgraduate in the department of anaesthesiology.
