To Whom It May Concern:

I am writing with pleasure on behalf of Samantha Theriot, in recommendation of an SLP-CFY position. I had the privilege of working with and mentoring Sam during her Summer 2020 clinical practicum as a graduate student at Boston University. She was placed under my supervision on the Intensive Cognitive and Communication Rehabilitation (ICCR) program, serving young adults with acquired brain injuries who are aiming to re-enroll in college level coursework. The program itself simulates a college-level classroom experience while integrating principles of neuroplasticity, cognitive and communication therapies, and metacognitive approaches. Graduate student clinicians are required within this placement to begin on day one fully prepared to administer a variety of standardized assessment batteries, while subsequently planning for and carrying out group and individual treatment sessions throughout the duration of the semester.

Sam entered our program with an exceptionally strong clinical skill set, and she readily applied her knowledge base when transitioning to our setting. In this manner, she was able to provide functionally appropriate and goal-directed therapies to her individual clients, and incorporate therapeutic strategies aptly in group settings. In addition, she possesses many valuable skills inherent in her personality and drive which were instrumental to her success as a clinician. Sam is consistently reliable, thorough, organized, and prepared across all aspects of her work, and she demonstrated these skills throughout her time in ICCR despite participating in multiple clinical placements over the semester. Moreover, she offers proficient and concise clinical documentation which highlights clients' clinical profiles in an easily read, professional format.

Sam has proven herself a skillful counselor, and she furthermore gained valuable experience in providing family education and training throughout the semester with us. She offered open and patient-focused communication with her clients' and their families families via teleconference. Collaboratively, she prepared and presented a successful seminar for our clients and their families highlighting metacognitive strategy training for classroom application.

This past year has brought unprecedented challenges to our delivery of quality clinical services across the continuum of care, and ICCR was no different in that. Our program, however, was able to make a successful shift to on-line and teleconference delivery, a shift which I strongly believe was significantly aided by the contributions of our accomplished graduate student clinicians. Sam remained flexible, motivated, confident, and capable throughout a variety of novel obstacles for which she had limited prior experience to draw from. Throughout it all, she remained patient-centered in her focus and continued to provide exceptional group and individual therapy services first and foremost. It was my pleasure working with Samantha, and I am delighted to offer her my recommendation. Sincerely,

Anne Citorik, MS, CCC-SLP

Graduate Clinical Supervisor

Boston University

I am writing to recommend Samantha Theriot for a SLP-CFY position. I am Michael Walsh M.S. CCC-SLP specializing in head and neck cancer dysphagia at Boston Medical Center. I have been a practicing clinician for 50 years and have supervised many graduate students. I had the pleasure of supervising Samantha during the Summer of 2020, and compared to other students, Samantha Theriot distinctively stands out.

Samantha arrived at Boston Medical Center with strong knowledge base of dysphagia intervention. From the start of her placement, she demonstrated an ability to interpret modified barium swallow studies and provide accurate recommendations when reviewing patient records for a variety of different disorders including head and neck cancer, stroke, and trauma. During her externship at Boston Medical Center, Samantha quickly became proficient in navigating our records system (EPIC), interpreting fiberoptic endoscopic evaluation of swallowing, and forming relevant clinical questions and intervention strategies based on each patient’s history. Furthermore, her ability to efficiently and succinctly record clinical documentation while incorporating appropriate medical terminology truly makes her stand out as a candidate. Samantha demonstrated flexibility and adaptability when treating patients from diverse backgrounds, skillfully utilizing interpretation services. Her strong drive and emphasis on patient centered care was highlighted in her patience and persistence when providing care via interpretation. Following each session, Samantha would translate recommendations for these patients into an easily understandable text that was then sent to the patient using the mode of communication requested during the session. Samantha’s consistent optimistic attitude, organization, reliability, and eagerness to learn made supervising her a true pleasure. This past year posed unique challenges and constantly changing protocol due to COVID- 19, all of which Samantha skillfully adapted to. She went above and beyond to ensure clients of all skill levels were able to attend virtual appointments by educating them on how to navigate the telehealth platform prior to their appointment.

It was a delight working with Samantha, and I am eager to offer my recommendation. If you require any more information, please contact me at 339-***-****.

Sincerely,

Michael Walsh, M.Ed., CCC-SLP

To Whom It May Concern:

It is my pleasure to write this letter of recommendation on behalf of Samantha Theriot. I have known Samantha during her graduate study in the Department of Speech Language and Hearing Sciences at Boston University. She served as my Teacher Assistant for the graduate course SH 738 Dysphagia.

While I do not know her in a clinical capacity, Samantha has impressed me with her management of the role of Teacher Assistant. She has a solid knowledge base of dysphagia, as well as anatomy/physiology and neural control of swallowing. She has independently managed students’ inquiries and provided instruction with little direction from me. She works efficiently and meets deadlines without difficulty. Samantha has the necessary critical thinking skills to ask appropriate questions and consider a variety of solutions. I know our faculty feels Samantha is one of our strongest graduate students. I worked as a medical SLP for over twenty years before pivoting to academia, and I understand the value of a clinician who can troubleshoot and independently access resources as needed. In my eyes, Samantha has the foundation and ambition to become an outstanding clinician. I give her my strong recommendation for any position she pursues. Sincerely,

Rachael Kammer, MS, CCC-SLP
