As a Learning Assistant, I was responsible with corresponding with students in order to inform them of upcoming assignments, due dates, review sessions, and exam instructions. I held approximately 3 hours a week of review sessions, in which I developed PowerPoints of study strategies, topics that would be on the exam, and review questions. Each week, I attended development trainings in which I learned how to better understand students’ backgrounds, experiences, and how to handle challenges.

I was responsible for performing 15 minute rounds, vitals, assisting nurses with activities of daily living, and assessing the wellness of patients in order to report any concerns. I also was a patient sitter in which I moved to various units of the hospital to sit with patients who were at higher risk.

As a Peer Mentor, I worked with students on a semester term to help them achieve academic success. I served as a guide for students who were having difficulties in school to reduce students from dropping out of school. I also provided emotional support to students and provided them with resources as needed. Some of my job responsibilities included hosting two meetings a week per student, developing plans, and attending weekly training to develop better communication and ethical skills.

As a Co-Coordinator for the Fall Welcome Program, I worked as a team to develop safe and effective ways for the 2,000 incoming students to meet one another and learn the university campus through the COVID-19 pandemic. I also assisted in training 250 student ambassadors by creating and teaching a COVID-19 health safety plan, and developing a plan for socially distanced activities and spacing. I also was responsible for hosting a night of activities where I planned several events both virtually and socially distanced.

Peer Mentor: 08/2018- 04/2019

As a Peer Mentor for Success at WMU, I assisted in transiting incoming freshman and transfer students into Western Michigan University. I was responsible for up to 40 students at a time, and sent weekly emails with different study techniques, and highlighted resource at the university. Each week, I held up to 15 one hour office hour times where I helped many students one-on-one with their challenges with school, assisted students in finding clubs that fit with their major, and organized upper classmen students to discuss their successes in their major.

I worked approximately 100 hours in assisting Dr. Anita Li on her research project studying behavioral choices with decision making. I assisted with scheduling participants, running the study alone, and communicating effectively with the researcher, other research assistants, and participants.

Prior to the pandemic moving the university online, I worked in Dr. Lisa Baker’s Biophysiology lab studying the effects of various drugs on rat’s behavior. I assisted in handling rats, administering drugs, and running labs.
