A Little Bit About Myself
My name is Matthew Smith, and I am from Manchester, United Kingdom. I am an aircraft engineer in the Royal Air Force with 5+ years’ experience at the time of writing this. I see myself as a creative, energetic asset of a workforce with an engineering orientated mindset due to my current profession. I am a motivated person in all aspects of my life, work related and in my own leisure time, with examples of this being striving to problem solve to carry out a task, going to the gym to keep on top of my personal health in my free time as well as learning a new language in my spare time. I am passionate about engineering and what I do and thrive off seeing my results in the workplace and how I can make an impact.
My Career Goal
I am seeking a new career challenge and I am willing to relocate. I have a strong desire to explore different cultures and languages and pursue a new career path. My ambitions are to progress myself as an individual and in turn contribute significantly to the future of the company. My career goal would to be to progress not just myself in the hierarchy of a company, but to also progress the company itself by learning and executing the tasks in the job role I desire. With the skills I possess, such as problem solving, hand skills, motivated and hardworking, to continue a career in aviation would be very beneficial and I feel I could continue to enjoy an illustrious career in this field.
Experience
My current job role is aircraft engineer (Mechanical) in the Royal Air Force and have been in this position for 5 years. I attended DCAE Cosford for approximately 18 months to complete my engineering training and have 2 years’ experience on Sentinel R1 (Bombardier Globemaster) as well as nearly 2 years’ experience on the Puma Mk2 helicopter. As an aircraft engineer (mechanical), my occupation includes the replacement of mechanical components on aircraft, fault finding, fault investigation and preventative and schedule maintenance. This requires me to be hard working, attentive and punctual to maintain the aircraft to meet the flying programme. Working as part of team is essential in my role, as well as having the ability to work alone. Teamwork is very important to me because I feel like when everyone can pool together their ideas to complete a task, it is very effective and forms trust and bonds between colleagues. On numerous occasions I have demonstrated dealing with adverse situations in my career, for example when I have been deployed on operations to Cyprus and Afghanistan. This enabled me to gain the valuable skill of working under pressure in a fast-paced environment and gain knowledge and experience of my job role. As well as my main job role, I have also actively taken on responsibilities outside of work, such as being a representative to the workplace welfare club which involves arranging out of work events for the workforce. This requires me to be very flexible and adaptable inside and out of the workplace.
My Skillset
I feel like I have a valuable skill set to be beneficial asset to your company. During my time in the Royal Air Force and engineering, I think being in such a disciplined and fast paced environment has enabled me to work efficiently to complete my work to the highest standards that are required. Also, being in a job role that is so physical, I feel my hand skills would be up to the standard you will require at the company. Problem solving and fault investigation is also a day-to-day task that I carry out regularly and I think the importance of it in this role regarding aircraft engineering is very high. Below is a list of further skills I feel I possess with some justification:
-Computer skills – paperwork and being computer literate is a day-to-day task during an engineering day.
-Leadership – Taking the lead can happen with some tasks and I feel like I have fulfilled this and demonstrated my leadership with managing a team on a task.
-Following diagrams – Diagrams are involved in most tasks I carry out and being able to follow them is essential in carrying out the work.
-Spanish language – Although I am not competent in this, I am currently undertaking a Spanish course online with the hope of becoming fluent soon.
-Ability to work under pressure – With deployments to Afghanistan in a challenging environment, pressure surrounds you and being able to work under that is a special skill that I feel I can do very well.
-Teamwork - In my experience, this is the most important asset to have in the engineering world as working as a collective and exchanging ideas to overcome a tasking is the most efficient way to safely complete it.
-First Aid – In the Royal Air Force, I have maintained my first aid accreditation to keep people safe in the workplace, as well as undertaking a combat medic course in Afghanistan.
Education
St Ambrose Barlow secondary school, Salford, UK (2009-2014)
-I completed secondary school with 6 grade B’s, 2 grade A’s and a C including 2 B’s in design technology and an A in IT with certificates to show.
Trafford college, Stretford, UK (Engineering and manufacturing) (2014-2016)
-I completed my first year in Trafford college and gained a double distinction with certificates to show. However, I did not finish the second year due to opting to join the Royal Air Force.
DCAE Cosford, RAF, Wolverhampton, UK (2016)
-I completed 18 months here completing an NVQ Level 2 and an NVQ Level 3 in aeronautical engineering (equivalent to 2 A Levels) All modules were completed with certificates to show.
Mechanical qualification course (Puma Mk2), Airbus, Oxford Airport, UK
-Pass. Although this is a course, I thought it would be beneficial to add as it shows my competency and understanding of the mechanical aspect of the aircraft I work on.
Final Note
I feel like it is worth mentioning that in the military, once we hand our notice in to leave, it is possible to have the option to complete courses to aid in securing a job outside of the military e.g., wiring courses etc. If any extra courses are desired for me to be considered for this job, It is possible to do some courses before I leave.
