Once the more interpersonal aspects are established, students will be introduced to small group and organisational communication.

Computyping (COMP112) - NQF Level 5 – Module Credit Value 13 In this module, students learn to use the computer keyboard and are then provided with the skills needed to use word processing software to create new documents as well as documents based on existing manuscripts. Students are required to use a range of word processing features to create, view and modify a document and to ensure that the newly created documents serve their intended purpose. The purpose of this module is firstly to ensure students have the basic grammar and spelling skills in order to write literary texts. Secondly, the module emphasises the importance of language and meaning through studying various contemporary literary texts. Through these texts, students develop sensitivity for the nuances of language and are able to write their own literary texts. Magazine and Feature Writing (MAFW112) - NQF Level 5 – Module Credit Value 16 Magazine and Feature Writing has been designed to provide students with the skills needed to write Magazine and Feature articles. Students are introduced to the processes and procedures which are needed when writing Magazine and Feature articles. It provides a comprehensive background into the practice of magazine and feature writing through examples of written texts. Students practically apply these writing skills to a given brief.

Media Studies 1 (MEST111) - NQF Level 5 – Module Credit Value 16 The purpose of this module is to explore the history and practice of media studies as it applies to the media industry in South Africa. This module focuses on the various forms of media and the impact of media in society. Newswriting 1 (NEWR119) - NQF Level 5 – Module Credit Value 21 News Writing 1 has been designed to introduce students to writing news. It provides a comprehensive background into the practice of journalism. This module allows students to engage with the process of News writing as well as understanding the fundamental principles of News writing.

Practice of Journalism (PRJO119) - NQF Level 5 – Module Credit Value 5 The purpose of this module is to provide students with an understanding of the dynamics of journalism and an opportunity to demonstrate this understanding through compiling a portfolio consisting of various written pieces. Sub-Editing 1 (SUED119) - NQF Level 5 – Module Credit Value 24 The purpose of this module is to provide students with a foundational and practical knowledge of sub-editing in the field of journalism. This module explains the various roles of the sub-editor, ranging from the fundamental principles of proofreading to writing appropriate headlines and captions, cropping and composing photographs and laying out publications. Work Integrated Learning 1 (XDIJ119) - NQF Level 5 – Module Credit Value 8 This module provides the opportunity for students to apply acquired knowledge and skills of journalism practices to a simulated journalistic activity. Students are required to conduct research on a specific topic and write an article based on that topic which they will then edit with the second year journalism students. This simulation of researching and writing an article will provide students with the experience of the process of news flow and how this flow operates within a newsroom. Broadcast Journalism (BRJO212) - NQF Level 5 – Module Credit Value 10 This module focuses on the fundamental principles of broadcast journalism and the tools that are used by broadcast journalists. Television and Radio is explored in South Africa and this knowledge is applied to current journalistic practices. Communication Science 2 (COSC221) - NQF Level 5 – Module Credit Value 15 The purpose of the module is to provide students with knowledge and understanding of communication within the contexts of intercultural communication, public speaking and presentation skills, organisational communication and mass communication. It introduces students to development communication and persuasive skills required to work within a diverse work environment. Internet Journalism (INJO212) - NQF Level 5 – Module Credit Value 6 The purpose of this module is to introduce students to internet journalism, specifically focusing on internet newspapers. It provides students with an overview of the functioning and editing processes of internet newspapers. The evolution of internet journalism is examined as a means of encouraging students to think about the future of Internet journalism. Introduction to Publishing (INPU221) - NQF Level 5 – Module Credit Value 6 The purpose of this module is to provide students with foundational knowledge of Desktop Publishing software application that will allow them to create various paper based publications.

Media Law and Ethics (MELA211) - NQF Level 5 – Module Credit Value 6 The purpose of this module is to provide students with the fundamental knowledge of legislation relating to the Law of Communication and media.

Media Studies 2 (MEST212) - NQF Level 5 – Module Credit Value 18 The purpose of this module is to explore the practice of ethics as it applies to the media industry in South Africa and to those institutions which govern this industry. This module focuses on media policies and the procedures and processes followed in compiling a media policy in South Africa.

Newswriting 2 (NEWR211) - NQF Level 5 – Module Credit Value 20 The purpose of this module is to expand on the knowledge and skills taught in News writing 1. Specialist beats are covered in greater detail than in News writing 1 and students are introduced to writing creatively for the news media. Two key points in this module are quality of writing and understanding the news writing process. This module further prompts students to engage with the media around them and to develop skills in the various styles of news writing.

Opinion and Specialist Writing (OPSW212) - NQF Level 5 – Module Credit Value 20 In this module students learn the theories and principles of Opinion Writing and Specialist Writing. Students are then required to apply these

The module covers aspects of publishing, design – elements, typography and images– as they apply to the print news media i.e. broadsheet and tabloid newspapers and their layout and design. Sub-Editing 2B (SUED212) - NQF Level 5 – Module Credit Value 8 The purpose of this module is to build on the knowledge and skills learnt in Sub-editing 1 and apply them collectively within the electronic editing process, using current software to practically engage with sub-editing design and layout skills. The module covers aspects of publishing and design - elements, typography and images - as they apply specifically to magazines.
