SUMMARY

A side hustle as a “landscaper” (I knew how to cut grass and guessed at the rest) led to meeting the founder of a PR firm which led to a career in PR and marketing which led to a life involving sports, food, storytelling and incredible brands along the way. Hustling since Day 1. Resume best read from the bottom up! In summary, though, I specialize in the following:

• Brand Strategy

• Public Relations

• Sports Marketing

• Integrated Communications

• Partnership Development

• Experiential

• Social/Digital Media

• Reputation Management

EXPERIENCE

MAIN EVENT ENTERTAINMENT, Plano, Texas

Head of Marketing Communications, Partnerships, Social Media & CSR, Dec. 2019- Current I missed it! Lured back into corporate America for an unexpected opportunity to be part of a brand’s biggest period of growth and category takeover. Got things rolling (very punny) by activating around National Bowling Day (of course it’s a thing) and have spent every moment since – even during “Corona season” as my 7-year old calls it – building cultural relevance and community engagement for the social entertainment brand. Before you ask, my best activities are bowling and pop-a-shot. High score: 178 (bowling) and 90

(pop-a-shot)!

• Develop communication and sponsorship function from scratch.

• Elevate brand relevance through new partnerships, first-ever stunts, press and digital media.

• Manage brand reputation through Coronavirus shelter-at-home which forced closure of all centers nationwide.

• Create “Deliver Game Night” strategy to insert brand into third party delivery by offering food and fun packages.

• Work day-to-day with executive team on long-term strategic growth plan – including new partnership with VC group

(RedBird Capital Partners).

5th YEAR GROUP, Frisco, TX

Founder, 2019-Current

This thing called entrepreneurship! Created my own consultancy group working on behalf of startups, national brands, athletes and sports agencies to grow brand influence and awareness. Secured a long list of clients – Mizzen+Main, Papa John’s (more on them later), Jack Link’s, Caribou Coffee, Unrl Clothing, Main Event, Myles Garrett (Flash!), Adam Thielen, IMG/Endeavor, and Institute for Athletes (IFA), among others. Responsible for MMS&B. Oh, that’s a marketing acronym no one is using yet? Stands for marketing, messaging, strategy and branding. LOL

YUM! BRANDS/PIZZA HUT, LLC, Plano, Texas

Senior Director of Public Relations, Sponsorships, and Social Impact, 2012-2018 Welcome to the Big Show. Took my love of QSR to the world’s largest QSR franchisor – Yum! Brands – as director (then senior director) of public relations and sponsorships for the world’s largest pizza company. Built a team from the ground up that included all PR, CSR, plus a true strategic approach into sports marketing through partnerships with the National Football League (NFL), NCAA and ESPN’s College GameDay. Worked daily with local franchisees (the best people you’ll ever meet!) to gain their input and support around all strategic initiatives and experiential activations. Managed agency as well as relationships with leagues, studios and influencers. Oversaw P&L, budgets, and billings.

• Developed overall brand communications strategy to align local and national storytelling for strong cohesive, consistent story platform.

• Moved the brand from communications approach reliant on new product news to a position better focused on broader storytelling that included business, employees, marketing, events and giving back. Doug Terfehr, Page 2

• Implemented all-new measurement and tracking tools to demonstrate increased ROI on corporate communication initiatives.

• Created corporate brand partnership strategy, including all national sports, entertainment, and media relationships. Spearheaded investment in partnerships that included the NFL, NCAA and local teams, and served as creative lead for implementing ideas to massive those investments.

o Activated award-winning campaigns at every Super Bowl and Final Four from 2012-2018

• Created and implemented international crisis response playbook and training program.

• Served as single source for all crisis situations, media opportunities, speaking engagements, strategy & planning.

• Repositioned social impact around one initiative of literacy, resulting in system-wide implementation of annual fundraiser.

• Managed team that grew from one to 14.

FLEISHMANHILLARD, St. Louis, Missouri

Senior Vice President, Global Co-Lead Sports/Consumer Marketing Division, 2005-2012 Found a home in St. Louie. Accepted a relocation – I didn’t even know companies did such things – to hop aboard what would be the agency ride that changed everything for me. And I don’t just mean my favorite baseball team (Go Cards!). Proudly served as account lead for some of the most revered companies in the world like Nike, Gatorade, EA Sports and Chevrolet to representing powerful sports properties such as The Masters, US Soccer and PGA of America. It was at FH that I found my LOVE for QSR. On my first day, literally, there was a brainstorm for a new business opportunity with upstart pizza chain Papa John’s. As the new guy, they felt I

“had time.” So, I was put on point to help drive the pitch. It worked. For seven amazing years, I ran that business and created some of the most amazing and memorable campaigns of my career. Along the way, I also picked up Buffalo Wild Wing, Steak ‘n Shake, and others, as clients. But forever at FH I will be known as one thing – “Papa Terf.” (And hopefully as a pretty good guy, too!)

• Engineered launch of sports marketing division, including cross-continent coordination of peers and clients around sports/entertainment.

• Served on agency’s national “media council,” small group of media relations experts leveraged across the network to drive media coverage for a variety of clients.

• Served on integrated marketing council that brought together top practitioners from around the world in the areas of marketing, digital, crisis, internal, public affairs, financial, and technology sectors to showcase overall agency expertise.

• Led agency’s early adoption of digital and other emerging forms of communication to drive company growth and expand offering to existing and new clients.

• Received agency’s first-ever global Cannes Lions for integrated marketing campaign led by PR. ADDITIONAL EXPERIENCE

CARMICHAEL LYNCH RELATE/SPONG, Minneapolis, Minnesota, Senior Associate, 2002-2005. Literally got this job because I was doing a little side-hustle landscaping for the owner’s wife. Pretty good reference when she suggested her husband, Doug Spong, meet with me. Learned everything I could from him. And her. Still friends to this day. SUN NEWSPAPERS, Minneapolis, Minnesota, Editor, Started in news covering city council meetings. Oy. Wrestled by way into sports. Yay! Won 2001 Minnesota Sportswriter of the Year. Thought I was on top of the world! EDUCATION
