PROJECTS & Description:

Project

Title : Enhancement of Weld bead hardness by employing random Vibration during Arc Welding.

Role : Team Leader.

Description:

The main objective of the project is to study the influence of mechanical vibrations applied to the work parts during welding on material mechanical properties such as hardness and fatigue strength. In this work, a systematic design has made to provide vibrations to the work part. This approach using conventional design is implemented to investigate the material properties like hardness of the weld bead. Welding is one of joining process, in which high residual stresses are developed. To decrease these stresses, methods like heat treatment and shot peening are used in earlier days. But these methods require separate equipment and also consume lot of time. To reduce cost of extra equipment and reduce time a new technique is developed in the present work. In this technique vibrating table stand is fabricated with the help of arc welding, Random vibrations are generated by the rotation of cams and shaft arrangement attached at the bottom of the vibrating table. Speed of the cam shaft is varied by controlling the Rheostat and autotransformer. Hardness tests are carried out on the welded work pieces by Brinell hardness machine. It reveals that up to 900 rpm cam shaft speed hardness value increases, beyond that speed hardness increases rapidly that leads to cracks in the weld bead

Observations:

Vibration assisted welding (VAW) has emerged as a successful replacement for heat treatments and post-weld vibration treatments of arc welds to reduce residual stresses and distortions and thus to improve its mechanical properties. This review paper tries to create a knowledge platform for such a next generation research by consolidating the findings, merits, demerits and shortfalls identified hitherto in the field of VAW. This paper presents a review on the various techniques and processes of applying vibration to the welding system and their effects on microstructure, mechanical properties and residual stress of welds, and the directions for future research are presented. Vibration of work piece during welding, oscillation of weld pool, oscillation of molten droplet, oscillation of welding arc and vibration of welding electrode were identified from the literature as the possible ways of imparting vibration. The advancement in the direction of computational work is also observed.
