PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

Senior Health Nutritionist (40 hours/ week/ fixed term) Feb 2011-present

United Nations Relief and Works Agency, Headquarters, Jordan

Created, planned and implemented UNRWA’s strategic nutritional program that crosscut both the Non-communicable disease (NCDs) and the Maternal and Child Health (MCH) departments. This Program integrated across the five fields of UNRWA’s operation (Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, West-Bank and Gaza). The above was achieved by using an interdepartmental collaboration within UNRWA departments, multisectoral partnerships with Local NGOs and Hosting countries.

Main accomplishments

-Created and produced UNRWA’s first Nutritional Guidelines for 500 physicians and 1000 nurse, across 143 health centers, using adult learning techniques to improve the capacity and counseling skills of health staff on nutritional prevention and treatment for patients with NCD.

-Created and produced UNRWA’s first Maternal and Child Nutritional Guidelines, for 1000 nurses and midwifes. Tackling the well-being and nutritional care throughout the phases of pre-conception, pregnancy, lactating to weaning.

-Participate in developing a health digital platform for the patients with NCD, by creating the tool kits and educational materials for the e-NCD smartphone application.

-Led the school health policy update on the medical examination for 1st graders, by introducing the anemia screening for the 57,000 1st grader school children entering the 670 UNRWA schools.

-Designed and planned the nutritional aspects of UNRWA’s Diabetes Campaigns in 2014 and 2015. Implemented, monitored and evaluated the campaigns activities and budget, which enrolled 3000 NCD patients in 62 selected health centers.

-Drafted two funding proposals that were awarded for UNRWA’s NCD department by which an online training module was implemented for all UNRWA’s health staff (500 physician and 1000 nurse) creating patient’s self-monitoring tool kits.

-Participated in the technical design of UNRWA’s mobile application for mothers attending Jordan health centers. By 2018, around 91,000 pregnant women were enrolled.

-Integrated the Micro-Clinic International (MCI) Program in 115 Health centers, along with the NCD team; modified the MCI training modules, to train 36 nurses as training facilitators, monitored their training for 996 nurses; and supervised the project budget. This program resulted in enrollment of around 60,000 NCD patients for over 2 years.

-Created innovative nutritional materials for patients with NCD, such the UNRWA’s NCD passport for 120,000 patients across the 5 hosting countries, in addition to creating a holistic tool kit for diabetes self-care.

My duties in the agency also included, but were not limited to:

-Created, planned, and led the first community-level examination of child malnutrition and food insecurity among Palestinian refugees in Jordan camps, through a representative population-based household, using mix-methods studies.

-Supervised the food ration programming and food assistance that supports the abject poor in Syria and Gaza, issued the official approvals for food basket contents and shipping. In addition to supporting the e-voucher modalities with the Relief and Social service department, for Palestine refugees living in Jordan, Lebanon, and the West Bank in camp.

-Perform an integral role in updating UNRWA’s Technical Instructions of the MCH, NCD, and micronutrients management.

-Cultivate the capacity building of UNRWA’s 1500 health staff in relation to all nutritional health aspects, by assessing training needs, organizing and implementing training activities; through engaging the local communities in the camps, and host countries.

-Contribute to improving the nutritional services for UNRWA’s schools, practically school health canteens.

-Design, plan, implement, monitor, and evaluate the health nutritional operational researches, particularly, in the preparation of protocols, data monitoring, analysis and preparation of final reports.

-Provide emergency support on nutrition-related matters to geographic (host countries).

-Perform as the health focal point in UNRWA’s Protection Department and participate in the protection framework for the agency and action plan in UNRWA’s operational countries.

My main role involved in planning and conducting the project activities, by managing the project plan; manage status reports; and work with local and international NCD stakeholders, more specifically:

-Planned and scheduled the project/research activities, by identifying internal and external stakeholders’ matrix in Yemen, and developed the work breakdown structure and timelines.

-Developed and finalized the Harvard Medical School-Institutional Review Board protocol.
