Job Description

The Section Head Medical Technologist is in charge of the general operations of the Section

of Microbiology, in the Clinical Laboratory. He/She is under the supervision of the Chief Medical

Technologist pertaining to administrative matters, and under the technical supervision of the Lead

Pathologist, the Chair, and other Pathologist.

• Duties and Responsibilities

1. Acts as the Medical Technologist-in-Charge of the Section of Microbiology; as such,

supervises the performance of laboratory procedures in the section by the Assistant

Section Head and Rotating Medical Technologist.

2. Performs routine and special laboratory procedures in the section.

3. Runs quality control and samples and verifies that the results are within the expected

range; if out of control, performs the investigation and remedial measures if

necessary.

4. Monitors all the equipment, and reports to the authorized personnel of repair is

necessary.

5. Ensures that there is enough supply of reagents available.

6. Performs examinations on samples sent by NEQAS, ARSP and other quality assurance

programs; submits the results for review and approval of the Lead Pathologist of the

Section, and of Chair.

7. Prepares the monthly reports of the section.

8. Prepares the quarterly Antibiograms.

9. Supervises training and performance of the interns, externs, Assistant Section Head,

and Rotating Medical Technologist.

10. Regularly attends all laboratory staff meetings.

11. Participates in the department’s Quality Improvement and other related activities.

12. May act as the Assistant Chief Medical Technologist or the Chief Medical

Technologist when either or both are not present or available.

13. Attends and participates in Hospital Committees assigned by the Chair.

14. Performs other duties or tasks assigned by the Chair, Lead Pathologist, other

Pathologist, and the Chief Medical Technologist
