As a nurse leader and scholar, my professional focus for inquiry is centered on patient-provider communication intended to empower individuals with knowledge while promoting autonomy and informed decision-making. My goal is to implement evidence based practice at point of care. As a member of Governor Jindal’s healthcare transition team, my vision for healthcare helped frame an action plan for Louisiana. As an appointed member of legislatively created committees, like the Heart and Stroke committee as well as the Chronic Disease Committee, my health literacy expertise transitioned into community projects. Politically strategizing with Joint Commission, the National Commission on Quality Assurance, and the American Nurses Association has aided in driving policy change through accrediting, governmental, and professional organizations that influence procedures within healthcare organizations. My work with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services’ (CMS) Care Transitions pilot provided action research needed to support my patient literacy work while establishing new billing codes for Care Transitions.
