SIGNATURE THEMES AND TALENTS

Many years of research conducted by The Gallup Organization suggest that the most effective people are those who understand their strengths and behaviors. These people are best able to develop strategies to meet and exceed the demands of their daily lives, their careers, and their families. The Signature Themes below present my five most dominant themes of talent. Adaptability: enables me to respond willingly to the demands of the moment even if they pull me away from my plans. I don’t resent sudden requests or unforeseen detours. I am a very flexible person who can stay productive when the demands of work are pulling me in many different directions at once. Includer: Stretch the circle wider. This is the philosophy around which I orient my life. I want to include people and make them feel part of the group. In direct contrast to those who are drawn only to exclusive groups, I actively avoid those groups that exclude others. I want to expand the group so that as many people as possible can benefit from its support. I am an instinctively accepting person. Regardless of race or sex or nationality or personality or faith, I cast few judgments. My accepting nature does not necessarily rest on a belief that each of us is different and that one should respect these differences, rather, it rests on my conviction that fundamentally we are all the same and are all equally important, thus, no one should be ignored. Each of us should be included.

Competition - I am instinctively aware of other people’s performance and their performance is the ultimate yardstick. I like measurement because it facilitates comparisons. I like other competitors because they invigorate me. I like contests because they must produce a winner. I am gracious to my fellow competitors and even stoic in defeat, but I don’t compete for the fun of competing. I compete to win. Maximizer: Excellence, not average, is my measure. Taking something from below average to slightly above average takes a great deal of effort and in my opinion is not very rewarding. Transforming something strong into something superb takes just as much effort but is much more thrilling. Strengths, whether mine or someone else’s, fascinate me. Like a diver after pearls, I search them out, watching for the telltale signs of strength. A glimpse of untutored excellence, rapid learning, and a skill mastered without recourse to steps—all these are clues that strength may be in play. And having found a strength, I feel compelled to nurture it, refine it, and stretch it toward excellence. I polish the pearl until it shines. This natural sorting of strengths means that others see me as discriminating. I choose to spend time with people who appreciate my particular strengths. Likewise, I am attracted to others who seem to have found and cultivated their own strengths. I tend to avoid those who want to fix me and make me well rounded. I don’t want to spend my life bemoaning what I lack. Rather, I want to capitalize on the gifts with which I am blessed. It’s more fun. It’s more productive, and counter intuitively, it is more demanding. Consistency: Balance is important to you. You are keenly aware of the need to treat people the same, no matter what their station in life, so you do not want to see the scales tipped too far in any one person’s favor. In your view this leads to selfishness and individualism. It leads to a world where some people gain an unfair advantage because of their connections or their background or their greasing of the wheels. This is truly offensive to you. You see yourself as a guardian against it.
