Job Description:

I worked as a Senior Safety Officer on four Large Opencast Coal Mining sites and one Industrial site. Site sizes would average between 800 000 Tons - 1 300 000 Tons of production that had to be produced each month. With 300 + machines on site and 400 + employees.

My duties at Trollope were as follow:

• Have daily safety meetings/Toolbox talks with employees.

• Inspect site machinery as well as all equipment being used and write a detailed report with recommendations for management.

• Hold regular internal audits and take corrective & preventative actions on deviations. Feedback had to be given to management.

• Revise company procedures and implement new procedures for sites

• Draft & implement baseline and issue based risk assessments and do daily continuous risk assessments with the work force.

• Inspect high walls and declare working areas safe for entry to start work.

• STRATA control for blasting areas.

• Do accident / Incident investigations and analyze root causes that are communicated through to site personal as well as management.

• Do contractor’s packs for new contracts and ensure the sites complies with client’s requirements as well as legal compliance.

• Do all the legal files for the sites and ensure they comply with legislation.

• Manage contractors working on site.

• Do all legal appointments for site personal.

• Assist in DMR audits held on sites.

• Assist in yearly ISO audits that were conducted on sites for ISO accreditation.

• Hold monthly safety committee meetings and report to management on future recommendations.

• Assist in drafting & revision of the internal management system.
