To Whom It May Concern:
I would like to express my sincere interest in the Public Relations and Communications Assistant position Enterprise Solutions’ Falls Church, VA office.
As a Senior pursuing dual degrees in both Public Relations and Political Science and a minor in Leadership and Social Change, I possess several years of diverse analytical and quantitative experience. With an array of relevant coursework, research projects and professional exposure, I understand how to leverage my abilities; delivering value independently and as a team.
I have extensive experience with public affairs and marketing campaigns. This fall, I had the opportunity to take on two new positions in the communications field, which increased my familiarity and comfort in fast-paced business environments. In August, I began an externship with the New River Community Action nonprofit (NRCA) as a Public Relations Consultant. At NRCA, I developed a media kit regarding the organization’s up-to-date Covid-19 response and government relief programs for local dissemination. A short month later, I also became a Political Affairs Intern for the Borgen Project, which advocates for poverty-reducing legislation globally. There, I had the opportunity to generate news coverage for the International Affairs Budget and submit my own legislative opinion pieces for publication. I also learned how to effectively communicate with key publics, such as campaign contributors, unions, corporations and the Chamber of Commerce. Both opportunities allowed me to become an innovative leader during unprecedented times, as well as enhanced my strategic communication skills and increased my knowledge about advocacy, crisis management and relationship building across the public interest field. Prior to this experience, I spent the fall semester of my Junior year participating in one of Virginia Tech’s field studies. The program, Creating Sustainable Social Change, focused on international marketing, public interest and global development. For my field study, I lived in Rwanda, Africa, where I worked on a semester-long grant proposal. The project addressed the presence of technology and entrepreneurship in developing countries by utilizing STEM education and robotics. To prepare for working with a non-governmental organization, specifically located in a post-genocide country, such as Rwanda, I conducted research on social marketing, international development and effective change agents. I also worked with local community leaders in Rilima, Rwanda to create specific programs that addressed gender equity, gender based violence and social inequality, as well as the Marcegaglia Onlus foundation, which supported the development of local healthcare and education systems. As a result of this opportunity, I embrace all challenges with a positive attitude and have learned how to become an effective leader despite many cultural, social and communicative differences. During my freshman and sophomore years, I was fortunate enough to work in support of two key congressional races. I supported Jennifer Wexton in her successful run for the House of Representatives, representing Virginia’s 10th District; as well as Ryan Sawyers, who was on the ballot for Virginia’s 1st District. Both of these experiences taught me a great deal about working effectively within a team environment, communicating with meaning and delivering on targeted objectives. The role I played in Jennifer Wexton’s race, specifically, fueled my desire to work for a cause I care deeply about and helped me gain an understanding of the importance of community outreach to make a lasting impact. It is my goal to be a part of a company with an enthusiastic and strong culture, team-oriented mindset and empowering work environment. There is no doubt that I will positively contribute to and uphold Enterprise Solutions’ positive reputation. Thank you for your time and reviewing my attached resume. I look forward to hearing from you and how I could fit on your team.
Sincerely,
Makenzie Carlin
