POST newspaper
I believe I was born to write. It’s the many hours that I spent reading, and writing my own prose and poetry while at school, that made journalism a natural career choice.
But, as with the curveballs that life often throws, I stumbled into the world of broadcasting at SABC KZN even before I qualified as a journalist. I must admit, I was bitten by the radio bug. The immediacy, dynamism and versatility of the medium helped me hone my skills and develop as a journalist.
During my time at the SABC, I travelled extensively across South Africa, covering political and socio-economic issues. I was the Joint Winner in the Best News and Actuality Programme for Newsbreak's Coverage of ANC Mangaung Conference at the MTN Radio Awards in 2013. The next year, I was a finalist in the same category for my coverage of the mourning period for former President Nelson Mandela live from Parliament. I left the SABC in 2017 after working in the radio news environment for over 15 years, with a desire to take on new challenges. But the doors were open for me to return on a freelance basis. I started working as a freelance journalism lecturer at Rosebank College in Durban – training and shaping a new generation of journalists.
Working with students, I was encouraged to start writing again. I also started my blog – which provides a portfolio of my varied forms and styles of writing http://inmywords.co.za/ Some of my posts have been published by The Daily News, The Witness and The Post newspapers. My hiatus from radio was short-lived. Nine months after I left, I was back on air. I began working as a producer on Lotus FM’s award winning talk show Walk the Talk, presented by the acclaimed Alan Khan. I was selected for the role not only to decide topics and guests but also to stand in for Alan as presenter as he is often out of the city and country. Given my journalism background, all controversial topics were well-handled with the broadcasting framework and the show also reflected an increased listenership within a year.
With my success as a producer and stand-in presenter on the talk show, it was time to set my sights on prime-time radio. In April 2019, I started as a producer on The Official Drive from 3 to 6pm. With a strong news background – I am able to multi-task and provide interesting, intelligent content for listeners. Due to the financial constraints at the SABC – I have also had to double up as traffic presenter and technical producer – this involves conceptualising and executing interviews and on air pre and post- promos.
The social media element is also a big part of my job description – because social media is critical today. So from taking pictures to uploading videos of interviews and guests – I do it all. I also completed a course in Multi-Media Reporting at the Institute for Advancement of Journalism through the SABC’s career development programme.
Radio runs in blood - and I have gained vast experience working in both news and programming. During my years of experience at the SABC, I have established a wide range of contacts. At the SABC, I have worked in every beat – doing analysis on political developments, economic and social issues, compiling the latest business news and presenting sport reports. I worked as the production leader for the current affairs programme Newsbreak on Lotus FM that airs every weekday at 1pm. This entailed deciding stories for the line-up, advising on how the stories should be tackled in terms of angles as well as editing stories and writing headlines. I am pedantic about every word that goes into a script - there’s no room for errors in grammar and spelling. But, I love creativity; being tongue-in-cheek when necessary and also raising some eyebrows with a play on words. I have pushed myself out of my comfort zone and I believe my wealth of experience will enable me to succeed in any media, communications and marketing role.
