Teaching Philosophy
Education is the cure for everything! I have a passion for education because I personally enjoy learning. One way that I continue to grow and learn is to learn from my students. The enthusiasm and passion for learning transcends when I educate others. Students learn best when they are not only interested in the topic, but the topic is also relayed with zeal. The role of an instructor is to present information to the students in a manner that seems effortless but is effective. In higher education, students are usually there because they want to learn. In adult education, the instructor should be like a facilitator of learning. Therefore, it is important not to waste the students’ time. The information should be presented without a lot of filler or fluff. I like to present topics straight to the point, so that there is also time left for questions and clarification.
I like to create an atmosphere in which the students can learn from each other. When dealing in higher education, most students do not realize just how much knowledge they already possess. When students begin to share their personal experiences, they are actually teaching each other, while realizing they can have the confidence to be the expert as well. An instructor needs to empower their students to realize that they should feel comfortable sharing their knowledge with others. While it is important to work within the constraints of the educational arena or institution, the students and my knowledge, it is very important to also be flexible. An instructor can make modifications and changes without actually changing the curriculum. This type of flexibility will allow one to see that something is not working and make modifications that work with that particular group of students. The whole dynamics of a class can easily change based on the group of students that are included. It is important to realize this and feel comfortable making adjustments. Motivation and feedback will encourage the students to improve upon things that are challenges and continue with those things that they understand are being done well.
