EXPERIENCE

Mechanical Design Engineer June - Dec. 2020

Columbus Cement Products Durban, South Africa

● Modeled the conceptual design of a tile-adhesive plant using Revit and implemented layout improvements that reduced total equipment by 10%.

● Led small teams in field-work to survey, dimension, and model existing equipment at out-of-service factories; reduced cost by 50% sourcing restorable equipment as compared to new.

● Designed piping and instrument diagrams (P&IDs) and mechanical equipment to be manufactured in-house according to relevant standards and codes.

● Calculated bulk solid silo structural loads per code using Python and Object Oriented Programming to allow variable inputs and verified results with FEA in ANSYS, to verify minimum material thicknesses. Junior Project/Robotics Engineer Apr. 2019 - May 2020 Global Riser Cape Town, South Africa + Offshore

● Managed recertification of marine drilling equipment from conception to completion in which I led 2 teams offshore over 3 months to deliver the project within budget and to customer satisfaction.

● Implemented Python scripts to automate generation of 1600 pages of inspection reports for over 600 parts at the project’s end, saving a week’s worth of work whilst eliminating errors. Robotic Pipe Inspection Tool:

● Designed and built the company’s first robotic pipe inspection tool for use on offshore oil rigs, which cut inspection times by 75% and increased inspection scope compared to previous projects.

● Modeled all parts and assemblies using SolidWorks and its sheet-metal tools to create the robotic tool housing with robust parametric sketches, allowing the design to be altered swiftly downstream.

● Conducted FEA using SolidWorks on functionally-critical parts, such as linkages and motor shafts, that were verified with hand-calculations and results validated by in-shop & field tests.

● Designed the electronic control system to operate the robotic tool using a 100ft tether and serial communication; installed and programmed a prototype system that demonstrated functions successfully.

● Issued fabrication drawings and coordinated with vendors for CNC machining of components requiring strict tolerances and finishes. Reduced cost by 25% through sourcing suitable surplus stock.

● Solved the cooling challenge of the motor driver by designing a custom, water-cooled aluminum heatsink. Mechanical Engineering Intern Jan. - Feb. 2017

Bosch Projects Durban, South Africa

● Drafted P&IDs for a soybean oil plant using AutoCAD whilst running custom scripts in Lisp to assist equipment ID generation, saving 25 minutes per P&ID compared to manual entry.

● Calculated pump sizing and material mass balances using Excel and pump curves. EDUCATION

University of Cape Town B.Sc. (Hons.) in Mechanical Engineering Nov. 2018

● GPA: 3.7/4.0

● ABET accredited under Washington Accord
