Work Experience
Norfolk Naval Shipyard, Portsmouth, Virginia 10/2004 – 10/2020
Welder Work Leader
Proffered daily guidance and hands-on proactive team leadership using a comprehensive knowledge of advanced welding and fabrication techniques. Setup and operated related equipment utilizing an in-depth understanding of blueprints, shop mathematics, mechanical drawing, physics, chemistry, and metallurgy, and electricity to complete routine welding, soldering, and brazing machine operations. Demonstrated proficiencies in the operation of programmable computer-controlled machines such as robots and automatic welders. Experienced with Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG) and Metal Inert Gas (MIG) welding, soldering, and brazing; and arc, plasma, and oxy-gas cutters.
Effectively used a comprehension of manufacturing techniques and assembly processes including Lean manufacturing systems to perform fabrications as a vital member of a team including specialized tasks in an assembly process. Created employee schedules and as needed, adjusted workloads/assignments to meet fluctuating production needs; set priorities; prepared timeliness; and ensured the completion of assignments as scheduled. In support of welding equipment and processes, set up and employed a wide range of welding equipment to complete manual welding and semiautomatic welding in multiple positions including flat, vertical, horizontal, and overhead.
Charged with properly attaching electrical current cables to the work piece being welded, adjusting the speed/settings of the welder, and properly applying welding material to work pieces. Designed jigs/fixtures to guarantee the prevention of distortion and to hold proper dimensions including tolerances to thousandths of an inch. Adjusted, inspected, cleaned, installed, and completed preventive maintenance on equipment.
Welded stainless steel and aluminum; used soldering and brazing techniques to join metal components requiring lower temperatures to complete welding processes and to prevent distortions/weaknesses that could occur. Utilized arc, plasma, and oxy-gas cutters to employ the heat from an electric arc, a stream of ionized gas (plasma), or burning gases to cut/trim metal objects on a wide variety of metals including stainless steel, aluminum, and copper nickel, nickel copper.
As Acting Supervisor, produced shift reports, recorded job turnovers, and conducted interactive briefings. Kept hot work tickets current; wrote DLs and DRs; and reviewed ATMs with workers. Inspected welding jobs. Determined the proper worker for each job and instructed workers on how to set up certain jobs. Supervised nuclear and non-nuclear ship fitters, pipe fitters, outside machinists, painters, and scaffolding workers.
