Initially Nigel set up and customized the Warehouse development and Testing Team environments and went on to organize their development life cycle processes. Once the tools were in place Nigel developed the testing strategy for the data warehouse project. After the warehouse testing team was established using extensive automation for testing, he moved over to the Facets testing team to help automate parts of the Facets testing. Once automation was established, he then moved on to develop testing strategies for the User Acceptance Testing, Performance Testing and End to End testing phases for the two projects, Data Warehouse and Facets. He implemented and was the team lead for all three of these phases. This included mentoring employees in the process and organization of these testing phases

The test team at its high point had only 7 members compared to a development staff compliment of 70. The disproportionate number of test staff compared to the development staff was achieved through extensive use of automation, in running the test conditions. The automated test conditions became an ideal source for regression testing, without any customization. This leaves the client with a re-useable process for the future

At the request of Goldman Sachs, Nigel’s new company inherited his previous contract position held by his last employer. He continued to supply Testing Consultancy to Goldman Sachs for their year 2000 effort and supported all their testing efforts all the way through to June 2000. The consultancy work at Goldman Sachs included writing test scripts to cover year 2000 testing for over 200 systems that had to be validated. This effort took a large team of people who were working under his guidance. A separate year 2000 environment was created which mirrored the important components of the Goldman Sachs environment, down to using the same routers and cabling systems. Each week the year 2000 environment went through a mock 1999/2000-year end and through February 28th, 2000 to March 1st, 2000. Each system was tested during the yearlong effort. His tasks included validation with the vendors that their testing covered the year 2000 adequately, to give Goldman Sachs the confidence that off the shelf software would not require thorough testing

His secondary task was to establish a test laboratory in The World Trade Center, NY. Worked closely with major testing tool vendors and hardware suppliers to provide a full quality assurance environment that clients could use to independently assess their systems. This included providing staff, ready-made procedures, hardware and tools. He created off the shelf methodologies that could easily be adapted to any company’s environment and standards. As part of his role he had to be fully conversant and proficient in the competitor’s tools e.g. Mercury Loadrunner, Winrunner, Test Director, the Rational Suite of products, Compuware and other Test Management tools that were available on the market. To assist in the analysis of performance testing, other tools were employed to drill down to the SQL, isolating the code that was causing any performance issues

He had full budgetary control of the USA entity of TSL and his remuneration was based on profitability of the company. The company attained profitability after 6 months and had maintained profitability until his resignation

TSL was merged into Cyrano Inc and he became the VP of Services for Cyrano Inc. This included helping Cyrano staff and external companies provide test environments. In this role, he had to create methodologies, testing plans, transaction modeling, selection of tools, implementation of testing environments, running the environments, and proving a complete black box approach to testing. He assisted both companies in creating strategies for year 2000 testing plus load and stress testing of their web applications. This included the modeling of required transactions and planning of the test environment, using Microsoft, Mercury and Rational testing tools in a Windows NT environment. After completing the strategies, he wrote the test scripts for the load and stress testing, including using the necessary tools to implement those test scripts and record their results. Analysis and a presentation of the results was required which proved that the environments would meet the desired Service Level Agreements. Management reporting was necessary for both these groups as at that time they did not have any Load and Stress testing in-house experience

He was also working on a real time authorizing, pre-paid telephone call system that has an in memory database to ensure high throughput. The on disk data store, used for data persistence, of the telephone call detail and the customer database was ORACLE 7.3.2. This means that small SQL procedures had to be written to enable the interrogation of the results from the authorizing and customer updates processes

System testing was carried out on the applications, hardware tolerance and performance measuring. The testing involves running simulators to re-create the input and output environments and the use of in house automated test tools that have been written using EXPECT
