WORK EXPERIENCE
The Pew Charitable Trusts – Portland, OR – January 2011- May 2020
Project Director, Conserving Marine Life in the U.S. (Pacific)
Daily responsibilities included overall management of 5 policy and outreach experts focused on influencing West Coast fishery policies, primarily before the Pacific Fishery Management Council (PFMC) and state agencies. This included strategic planning, reviewing all written material for policy comments and public-facing advocacy pieces. I also provided oversight of multiple contracts awarded to partner groups, and served as the institution’s spokesperson both internally and externally on West Coast issues. I was responsible for developing and maintaining the budget, including approximately 15-20% of my time dedicated to fund-raising activities.
I worked as part of a team-approach that involved all aspects of coordination within Pew. This included coordination with our philanthropic department in identifying potential donors, arranging one-on-one meetings and in developing grant proposals. Similarly, I coordinated with our government relations team to both arrange lobby meetings for me and to ensure that the information disseminated from others was fact-based and consistent with our campaign objectives.
Developed an annual budget of approximately $1 mil/annually, including donor cultivation and internal campaign development.
Led the growth from a single-issue portfolio (forage fish conservation) to multiple successful ocean campaigns along the West Coast, including successful fund-raising efforts that enabled the expansion to other issues.
Built a conservation campaign for precedent-setting West Coast forage fish protections, which led to the first-of-kind moratorium on currently non-targeted fish species through ecosystem-based management measures.
Conceptualized and designed a high-profile campaign to reduce bycatch in West Coast swordfish fishery including the promotion and approval of a new gear type (deep-set buoy gear) as an alternative to drift gillnets in fishery. Final implementation (underway by state agencies and PFMC) will dramatically reduce deaths of marine mammals and non-targeted fish species.
Designed successful campaign to prevent authorization of longline swordfish fishery authorization.
The Sierra Club - Portland, OR and Missoula, MT - January 2001 – November 2010 Sr. Regional Representative/Manager.
Managed the Portland, OR office from 2001-2007, and the Missoula, MT office from 2007-2010, with staff in remote locations including Boise, Bozeman, Billings, Sheridan and Bismarck. Daily duties included managing multiple campaigns and mentoring staff in policy and strategic planning. Work involved elements of policy, communications, and community organizing skills and fund-raising.
• Served as main liaison between national organization and state chapters, including expansion of Montana staff to include a “Beyond Coal” campaign and transition the lands protection work to include climate change considerations through a “Resilient Habitat” campaign.
• Conducted major conservation campaigns including wilderness additions to MT Hood and additional LWCF land acquisitions in the Columbia River Gorge as part of Sierra Club’s Lewis and Clark Bicentennial branding.
Lead Sierra Club staff on coalition to remove four lower Snake river dams.
Organized and participated in “fly-ins” and other lobby trips to Washington, DC.
Managed two major political campaign initiatives including volunteer canvass efforts in greater Portland area during 2004 Presidential election.
Organized a major door event for potential new donors at Moonlight Basin ski resort, where our regional work was presented in a series of presentations prior to an exclusive skiing experience.
Assisted Regional Director with major donor meetings, including attending one-on-meetings. One such meeting led to a $1 million dollar donation after a weekend of fly fishing and educating participants about our work.
Montana Human Rights Network –Helena, MT- April 1995- December 2000
Outreach Director
Daily responsibilities included outreach and community organizing around various progressive issues around a mission to promote pluralism, social justice, and equality in state and local jurisdictions. This included cultivation of chapter groups, organizing community public education events and working with state-based decision makers.
Designed and implemented volunteer activities and programs for statewide group.
Designed a unique outreach program that combined public education and speaking tours with community organizing. Statewide speaking tours included a holocaust survivor who spoke to high schools and community events; author Barbara Ehrenreich; and Gloria Flora (Forest Service supervisor whose commitment to public lands ignited the far-right “shovel brigade” throughout rocky mountain West.)
Assisted with fund raising efforts including year end pledge drives and large fund-raising events, including a luncheon with then director of the Southern Poverty Law Center Morris Dees.
