Volunteer Tutor

The Mamelodi Initiative, Pretoria

During my breaks from university, I have worked with a Pretoria based non profit organisation called The Mamelodi Initiative, tutoring in a holiday program for approximately 400 children in Grades 7 12. In my experience, I have taught Maths, English and Science to Grade 8s, 9s and 10s, hosted workshops ranging from entrepreneurship to computer skills. The experience reshaped the way I view community development and education. It encouraged me to form new leadership styles in order manage working with a class of about 32 children at a time, something which requires far more patience and attention to detail than any other leadership role I had previously taken on. I also saw my organisational and administrative skills improve from the demands of preparing lesson plans and creating structure for each day.

Jun 2018 - Jan 2020

Program Director

The Mamelodi Initiative, Pretoria

Following two years at The Mamelodi Initiative in which I had taught, engaged in administrative roles and hosted entrepreneurship workshops, I was approached by founders of the Initiative to direct the 2020 Summer and Winter programs. This role put me in charge of 400 students grade 7 12 as well 125 Volunteers. It was a great task that demanded months of prior planning. I was tasked with organising learning equipment, catering, a training day for volunteers, parent events, accommodation for volunteers coming in from the USA as well assessing and amending the curriculums from which the students learn from. Beyond this, the day to day responsibilities ranged from briefing volunteers and students twice a day, heavy administrative work such as placing students into classes, setting aptitude tests and completing volunteer recommendation letters and data capturing. The two week January 2020 program ultimately ran smoothly, I was thereafter offered the opportunity to direct the month long July program. This was Jul 2019 - Jan 2020
