Ivory Tower: cost and values of Higher education

I. Ivory Tower – Issues Raised in the Heart of Documentary American universities laid down the founding principles of spreading knowledge to all the walks of life since the 17th century. The commitment to provide quality education has been the prime goal since establishing different prestigious institutions in the United States. The overall study suggests in regards to the propagating education in affordable cost has always been a big and hard time question for educating institutions currently running in the United States. The objective of world-class education at the lowest possible cost is currently fading day by day as it is getting impossible to attain higher education, therefore, compel students to abandon their studies in half way. The education institutions have neglected to provide education in the cost- effective way as the educational environment demands restructure on the art of the state. Statistics reflect that the higher education cost increased by 1120% since the 1980s compared to food and health care expenses that reduced the paying capacity for education for common people. Higher education has become such expensive product in the U.S.A. that not everyone can afford it easily therefore usually they have to bear loan expensive. The system of institutional funding support for student education has also decreased by 40% compared to the huge rise of 230% in tuition fees. It reflects the education institutions getting commercialized as the business entity to attract more customer in order to earn more profit rather serving the social objective of cost-effective or free education to every individual without any discrimination. institutions or colleges demand such huge cost of education that seems impossible for students to continue their studies without external funding or student loans support. Access to free or cost- effective higher education to the poor has reduced from 116% to 42% as of the year 2012. Student usually ends up borrowing from loan industry for their expensive studies that rises above

$1 trillion till 2014 compared higher even than credit card debt in the U.S. It made higher education beyond the reach of not only the poor but equally to well-off class that they either leave the course without completing it or pay for its expense for the rest of their life. Studies also reveal that on average graduate student owes $25,000 in debt annually before pass out. On the other hand, the huge amount of extracurricular activities distract the student from academic studies. According to stats of 2012, 68% of the graduate program actually fail to accomplish their degree program Different reformations for cost-effective quality education within the reach of every individual leads to the online learning environment in the age of technology. The online learning system made its place in quality education yet it does not reduce the importance and need for public education in the teacher-student interactive environment. Different measures to ensure the interactive environment are still mandatory to educate the student in online learning management for keeping students’ interest and filling their learning gaps rather than just taking the credential diploma degree.

II. Analyzing the Higher Education Industry

The higher education industry has tremendous effort in quality education in the public sector to reach out to the student without any discrimination. The competition for providing higher education has increased that each institution engaged in building higher campus structures, providing multiple disciplinary courses, providing better housing, foods facilities, and

multi-complex sports arenas to facilitate the better environment for students. The high investment made in the administration than the faculty. The general environment of Higher education in the United States comprises the demographic segmentation based on the high income and low-income class, ethnic class segmentation, geographic locations impacts a lots

The sociocultural variables free education to everyone has become the ancient concept of inexpensive education. The movement for un-college initiated to introduce the free learning environment even without any college degree. Keeping in mind the examples of well-established multi-billionaires those not drop out the college degree but managed to make their identification with their skills, abilities, and expertise to excel in accomplishing their set targets. Another example that made accessible free education to open a window for an affordable learning environment through communal living space that mainly concentrates on education-related start- ups.

Technological trends set the greater concern for relieving the student from the burden of expensive learning in the form of online learning as free of cost means of education to common people without any discrimination.

The legal measure like Higher Education act of 1965 accommodates everyone under the shade of government support to free or cost-effective education. It serves to the social cause of providing free and world-class quality education equally within the reach of everyone. Economic condition suggests the unemployment or underemployment in case of unavailability of the higher education even after bearing the huge loan expense in the graduation tenure.

The buyer capacity to bear the higher education also reduced with increasing studies loan collective that ends up with leaving the graduate program in the half or paying it off throughout their life with fewer chances of employment opportunity. 3. Threat of New Entrants – Low/High

There is always the threat of new entrants in the form reformations either by the introduction of un-college campaign or education hack house in order to get easily available free of cost education on the internet. The introduction of the online learning management system for providing free education at every level without any geographic boundary is another step. 4. Threat of Substitutes – Low/High

III. Addressing the Ivory Tower Issues as the President As the president of Michigan University, the world-class education at an affordable cost within the reach of everyone is the prime objective of the public organization rather the profit based organization. The student support programs should be given preference with less amount of loan burden on the student side. The administrative expenses should also cut off to

accommodate the professional faculty then indulge in the social reforms to make the academic environment more fruitful and worthy to motivate student on graduation degree. The minimum amount of student should be in the class with more interactive and focus groups for better understanding.
