Career Details

MBBS

I have graduated from the Kurnool Medical College, Kurnool, and A.P., INDIA. Which one of premier medical schools in Andhra Pradesh. This institution laid the foundations for my basic medical training and clinical skills. The Govt. General Hospital, Kurnool has bed strength of about a thousand beds (1000 ) and is a tertiary referral centre.

Internship

I have undergone one year of compulsory rotating internship in Government General Hospital, Kurnool, A.P., India, a 1000-bedded teaching hospital. By rotation, I have worked in the departments of Medicine, Surgery, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Pediatrics, Ophthalmology and Dermatology. I was posted in a rural Primary Health Centre for 1 month as a part of my training in Preventive and Social Medicine. I had my first experience with emergencies in my casualty posting of 2 months.

MD in Anesthesiology

I have completed my three years of training in Anaesthesiology and Critical Care, leading to the award of MD degree in Anaesthesiology from Kurnool Medical College, Kurnool, A.P. INDIA, known in A.P. for the standards of patient care and good infrastructure and facilities for clinical & academic training. Training during this period involved working in all the subspecialties of anesthesia in this hospital. Posted in Nizams Institute Of Medical Sciences, Hyderabad, A.P. INDIA, for three months to have exposure in cardiac, neuro anaesthesia and critical care during October December 2001.

Nizams Institute of Medical Sciences, Hyderabad an 800 bedded hospital is a tertiary referral centre in the south Indian state of Andhra Pradesh, with all medical and surgical departments including the departments of Cardiothoracic surgery, Neurosurgery, Surgical Gastroenterology, Surgical Oncology, Plastic surgery, Urology, Vascular surgery and Orthopaedics. The Department of Anaesthesiology conducts about 10,000 anesthetics and manages around 650 patients in the Respiratory Intensive Care Unit annually. The hospital has a busy trauma centre and an excellent 12 bedded Respiratory Intensive Care Unit, with state of the art equipment, which caters to the critically ill.

As a resident during special training I was posted in cardiac and neuro surgical specialties and respiratory intensive care unit by rotation. I have also provided anaesthetic services outside the operation theatres, like Cardiac catheterization laboratory, MRI suite, CT scan under supervision.

On my call days I am posted with 2 other residents, forming a team, providing anaesthetic services for trauma patients, including orthopaedic trauma, neurosurgical trauma, various general surgical emergencies and vascular surgery emergencies.

As a postgraduate student I was given graded responsibility. During my first year I learnt the basic skills of anaesthesia, viz.: airway management, central neuraxial blockade, Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation, physiological and pharmacological basis of anesthesiology and also the physical principles of anesthetic equipment and monitoring. The concept of eternal vigilance was constantly drilled into me.

In my second year, I built upon the basic skills and improved my knowledge and understanding of anaesthesia. During this time I had an opportunity to work in the labour rooms and providing anaesthesia for caesarean sections. I was also involved in providing anaesthetic services outside the operation theatre setting viz. Electroconvulsive therapy, Burns dressings in the ward, Monitored Anaesthesia Care for upper gastrointestinal endoscopies, Radiation Oncology etc. During this period I was introduced to the basics of respiratory care and mechanical ventilation in a 4-bedded Intensive Care Unit catering to medical (Poisoning, ARDS, COPD) and Polytrauma patients.

In the final year of my postgraduate training I was first on call and have provided anaesthesia in elective and emergency situations, both independently and under supervision. I have worked independently in the labour rooms, trauma centre and was involved in handling various surgical and medical emergencies with minimal assistance from staff members. I am well versed in the placement of central venous catheters, arterial lines and invasive hemodynamic monitoring. I am also familiar with all kinds of mechanical ventilation modes in current clinical practice. I learnt the importance and consequences of taking decisions, when to act and more importantly when to call for help. The experience has given me confidence to handle most emergencies with calm and composure.

Teaching experience

During 3 years of my MD I was an active participant in the biweekly departmental seminars, journal presentations, case discussions and general clinics.

A part of the curriculum involved conducting regular training programme for nursing and paramedical students.

Research

I have presented a dissertation to the N.T.R. University Of Health Sciences, A.P. INDIA, titled Post Operative Analgesia By Epidural Ketamine And Tradamol In Abdominal Surgeries A Comparative Study in partial fulfillment of the requirements for MD degree in Anaesthesiology, in the year 2002.
