Regional Environmental Manager – Valmont Industries, Birmingham, AL

(October 2013- March 2014)

This position was a new role in the Steel and Concrete pole division. Provide environmental and regulatory oversight for pole manufacturing in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Nebraska, Texas, California and Tennessee. Establish new plant and corporate procedures and protocols for environmental reporting with compliance checklists and manuals. Conducted training for plant management and plant personnel around company expectations as well as environmental awareness. Develop new recordkeeping and reporting procedures for NESHAP standards. Other significant responsibilities and achievements include the following:

Successfully provided air permitting strategies and implemented new tracking and recordkeeping requirements as well as set higher expectations among the facilities.

Lead efforts to obtain NPDES permits and implemented addition recycling procedures.

Successfully implemented new sustainability targets and metrics for water and energy reduction at a plant level.

Provide waste management consultation to reduce hazardous and solid waste being generated as well as to develop practical recycling options for the plants.

Maintain SPCC, SWP3 Plans for current plant conditions.

Provided oversight of all EPRA Reporting, including TRI, 311 and 312

Corporate Environmental Manager - Boral Industries, Denver, CO (June 2005- October 2013)

Key role was to manage and provide environmental support to 35 facilities across the western region. Facilities were located in Colorado, Oklahoma, Texas, Nevada, Arizona and California. As their environmental consultant, I helped guide and develop plant personnel with multiple job requirements into functioning plant environmental managers. I also successfully implemented a sustainability program across each of the business units. As a team, we established procedures for tracking key sustainability metrics and set business targets for energy, water and Green House Gas reductions. My experience also includes auditing the majority of Boral U.S. facilities in various construction related businesses including Clay & Concrete Roof Tile Manufacturing, Fly Ash Terminals, Ready Mix Concrete, Brick Manufacturing and Sand & Gravel Operations.

One of my key accomplishments was to successfully implement and manage an Environmental Management System for tracking to completion, all environmental tasks including escalating notifications, to plant and corporate management. Other significant responsibilities and achievements include the following:

Serve as environmental subject matter expert for plant managers on compliance matters and special projects.

Manage contractors associated with source testing and air toxics modeling, established regulatory compliance practices including SOP’s for routine plant environmental tasks.

Responsible for training and mentoring key personnel within the manufacturing facilities to carry out routine environmental tasks.

Manage and negotiate regulatory permits with Federal, State and Local agencies.

Part of corporate audit team responsible for internal auditing including development and implementation of Boral U.S. Audit Protocols.

Implement and manage Boral environmental management system and provide training for implementation at a plant level.

Prepare Annual Sustainability Reports to Boral Australia.

Provide regulatory oversight on new and proposed environmental regulation, including attending rule making hearings and providing industry comments as necessary to state and federal agencies.

Assist plants in implementing Lean principals, including Visual Management Boards, SOP’s, Identifying Best Practices, and engaging hourly employees as well as supervisors on “improving processes and procedures.”

Manager of Environmental Compliance - Johnson City, TN (October 1988-May 2005)

Successfully manage and develop new environmental protocol for all of General Shale’s brick manufacturing sites. Develop and implement new standard operating procedures for zero discharge and solid waste landfills. Other significant responsibilities and achievements include the following:

Developed in-house solid/hazardous waste handling procedures. Implemented corporate-wide recycling program that eliminated all process water and minimized solid & hazardous waste generation.

Established state specific policy and reporting standards for each State’s Title V Permit as well as oversee facility compliance and work with regulators.

Worked with vendors and production personnel in evaluating cost effective and performance of air pollution control devices required with the new MACT standards and the CAA.

Prepare property leases and agreements for land and mining purposes.

Conducted environmental investigations remediation projects as well as Phase 1/2.

Work closely with attorneys and contractors on evaluating complex legal agreements, purchase/sale agreements and zoning issues.

Responsible for natural gas procurement and arranging intrastate and interstate transportation agreements.

Implement cost saving transportation measures and strategic purchasing plan for gas futures.

Work closely with President and CFO on forecasted costs, usage and market conditions and implemented a strategic purchasing program.
