Canadian Nuclear Laboratories

Ergonomics Specialist

286 Plant Road

Chalk River, ON, K0J 1J0

Greetings hiring committee,

I am writing to apply for the Ergonomics Specialist position with the Canadian Nuclear Laboratories in Chalk River. I came across this job posting and I could not miss this opportunity to work for your organization. I want to work in this field because I find the Ergonomics field fascinating, since it is rapidly changing with the advancement of new technology and different types of workloads placed on team members. On top of this, I have a cousin who works in a Nuclear plant in Ontario, and the experiences he has shared with me, have made me passionate about working alongside Engineers, Physicists, among other professionals within the field.

As a candidate, I provide you with extensive knowledge and versatile skills in Ergonomics, with experience working in manufacturing facilities. Throughout my work experience as a Student Ergonomist at Vistaprint Canada Limited I had the opportunity to conduct multiple ergonomic assessments and wrote several corresponding technical reports. This experience enabled me to have insight into how ergonomics and health and safety function in a manufacturing setting. I worked closely with the Health and Safety department to update Covid-19 related safety talk information sheets, which included proper mask care, and working in tight areas where social distancing on the job was not physically possible. I worked under the tutelage of the plant Ergonomic Specialist and the Senior Manager of Environmental, Health and Safety, who allowed me to sit in on weekly health and safety meetings, thus allowing me to gain more knowledge on the Health and Safety side of the plant.

My main focus during this internship, was Ergonomics. I did weekly ergonomic assessments out on the plant floor, seeing if there was any way to reduce the previously adjudged medium-risk jobs (yellow score), down to a low-risk job (green score). I used ergonomic tools such as RULA, REBA, the NIOSH lifting equation, amongst others, that I had been previously taught during my Bachelor’s degree in Human Kinetics program at the University of Windsor, as well as during the Advanced Ergonomic Studies program at Fanshawe College. The ergonomic-based courses that I took throughout the two programs, well prepared me to be confident in my abilities to use the aforementioned tools in a manufacturing setting. My previous experience as a Physiotherapy Assistant built my confidence in speaking publicly, as one of my tasks was helping run the Cardiac Rehabilitation Centre with a Physiotherapist and Kinesiologist. During this job position, I was tasked with motivated and assessing cardiac wellness clients with moderate-to-high intensity exercise on a treadmill and stationary bike.

Given my knowledge and education in the fields of kinesiology, health and safety, and ergonomics, along with my practical experience in a manufacturing setting, I am confident that I would be a valuable addition to your team. Thank you for taking the time to read my application. I would be incredibly grateful to work at the Canadian Nuclear Laboratories and apply my kinesiology and ergonomic background towards improving the ergonomics and health and safety of this work environment, which I believe my practical experience in ergonomics will help me succeed in. I look forward to hearing from you and I hope to have the opportunity to interview for this position. Feel free to contact me by phone or email using the contact information listed above.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Sincerely,

Aakash Patel
