Overview

Registered Nurse Supervisor- OHU, Staffing, PTs’, Complex 3 - Avenal State Prison

08/18/2012-present

Initially requested by Director of Nursing to accept role of Supervisor II for staffing, OHU, PT and to assist with Specialty Clinics. To supervise and direct all functions related to the above assigned areas. I assigned and review all staffing needs for the medical/nursing areas of the facility.( At the time there were over 90 employees),including Registered and Licensed Vocational as well as Licensed Psychiatric Techs. I also supervised and assisted the Utilization Management RN, the Onsite, Offsite RN, the Clerical technicians and the Teleclinic RN. I was responsible to provide direction and support for their job performance, to assure compliance with all federal, state and departmental policies and procedures and mandates. I review staffs work performance, responsible for evaluations and disciplinary actions as well as monthly audits to assure that standards are being met.

Since 2015 I have been the Supervisor for a Complex. This consists of two 16 hour medication clinics, 2 RN clinics, 2 Care Coordinator positions, 2 MH staff, 2 Primary Care Providers, 2 Mas’ as well as 2 Office Technicians. This position includes management of all clinic aspects. As SRNII I am responsible to oversee that all the patients who were identified as chronic care received their mandated tests, medications and were seen on a regular basis. The chronic care conditions included HTN, Diabetes, Asthma, COPD, DME, Hepatitis, TB, End Stage Liver Disease and Cancer. In reviewing these patients I need to ascertain and assess their current conditions and what future interventions or accommodations need to be made.

I am consistently reviewing the utilization of our resources clinically. This includes the chronic care but also the acute situations which necessitates further treatment or transfer out to another facility. I need to assure that we have the appropriate clinical staff to see the patient and that the staff perform as a team to work jointly to manage the care of the patient. In doing this I send weekly reports to upper management and direct the Case Managers as to what is needed with the individual. Another concurrent and utilization area I review are those patients with ADA issues or needing accommodation.

If in performing the concurrent reviews and assessing the utilization management of the patient I find issues that aside from being sent weekly in report I will send to the Quality management committee, the medication management committee and the patient resource committee which may be infection control, transfer out as high risk review and also if needed document in an incident report. These committees are chaired by the Chief Medical Executive, Chief Physician and Surgeon and the Chief Nurse Executive and consists of member from all disciplines.

I have the responsibility for all activities relating to TB testing, monitoring and evaluation of treatment plans for all I/P. This responsibility also includes the coordination of the annual TB testing program for I/P. DRG Reimbursement Coordinator – 1980-1985

As the first RN in the county to hold this type of position it was flexible as to what the duties would entail. I was responsible for the training and supervision of all ICD-9 coders and data entry staff. We shortened our coding time to 24 hours for same day procedures and within 3 days for most cases except the very complicated and those would be done within 5 days. I developed training and coding manual for their use and actively participated in the coding process. I attended all insurance company audits and payment arbitrations. We also were able to have most of the physician staff complete their health records with a 10 day window. In reviewing health records I would alert risk management to events that might become legal issues and then participated in the risk management, utilization review committees.

Patient Advocate- 1978-1980

Reported to the Chief Executive Office and the Chief Medical Officer all reports of financial, patient care and staff complaints. I responded to all codes and the emergency room to assist the staff in the care of the patient and their significant others. I would visit all preoperative patients the night before surgery. Worked closely with admitting and the ER as well as ICU for bed assignments.

Psychiatric Community Liaison -1976-1978

Reporting to the Director of Psychiatry the objective was to develop community based psychiatric programs that would utilize the services of our clinic. The development of an adolescent group for pregnant teens was started as well as an educational group for the fathers of the babies. In conjunction with the schools, the churches and the hospital as well as city leaders, I coauthored a grant from the Department of HEW for a multidisciplinary multifaceted adolescent teen pregnancy program. A grant was awarded for a Psychiatric Social Worker and a Partial Hospitalization program. We initiated group in the outpatient dialysis unit for the patients and for their families.

With much diligence we were able to start a bereavement program within the hospital for those with a terminal diagnosis as well as for stillbirths. We took this a step further and would make community visits to the homes of those who lost their loved ones.
