My views on the Deputy Director: Business Analysis & Relationship Management role in the Department ICT, University of South Africa Guiding principles

Fundamental requirements that will ensure success in this role Leading business analysis functions and principles

• Experience has taught me that the business analysis function is performed differently in different environments, i.e. the roles and responsibilities of a business analyst is specific to an organization. For example, at Unisa, the business analysts work on projects; perform project management tasks; act as change owners for all operational changes; and are responsible for customer relationship management. Notwithstanding the diverse responsibilities of the business analysts, they perform their tasks within the framework of BABOK principles and use tools that are covered in the knowledge areas of BABOK, i.e.:

Business Analysis Planning and Monitoring

Elicitation

Enterprise Analysis

Requirements Analysis

Solution Assessment and Validation

Requirements Management and Communication

Underlying competencies

• In my opinion, the Deputy Director: Business Analysis should ensure that the team is adequately resourced and equipped to fulfil their roles. This can be done in the following ways:

Identify the need for additional human resources, and motivate for these according to University policies and procedures

Invest in appropriate technology that will support the work that is being done by the business analysts

Review processes regularly – and improve when and if necessary – so as to ensure that the business analysts work in the most effective way(s)

Talent management through mentoring, training, leadership development

• Be an effective leader and a trusted member of the executive/extended management team.

• Display the cognitive ability and insight to contribute to strategy development and operational plan(s), management and execution.

• I regard it as the responsibility of middle management leadership to oversee the management of tasks in order to ensure timely delivery on strategic and operational targets and objectives.

• Provide effective leadership to the Business Analyst team, thereby enabling them to deliver value to their clients.

• “People” skills (i.e. soft skills) are becoming increasingly important in work environments in the fourth industrial revolution.

• A business analyst and/or business analyst team leader needs to enjoy working with people and require strong interpersonal competencies.

• At all times display integrity, objectivity, fairness, professional competence and due care.

• Build effective interdepartmental relationships with Operations, Developers, Governance, clients and professional service providers (when applicable). 14
