Professional Bibliography

I am a highly skilled career professional with more than 20 years as registered nurse in the state of Texas with an unencumbered license, with practical experience in hospital, home health, and primary care environments. I obtained a BSN in Nursing in and then an MSN as a Nurse Educator in 2008 and a post master’s certificate as an Acute Care Pediatric Nurse Practitioner on August 6, 2013 all from the University of Texas at El Paso. I was honored to have had one of my research projects accepted in 2009 at Arizona State University for a podium presentation, a project which I have included.

I am currently employed with Dr. Roberto Canales and see his patient at both PMH and EPCH. For 5 year immediately after graduating I worked in a level IV NICU as an Acute Care-Pediatric Nurse Practitioner. I am eager to continue my education and obtain an NNP post master’s certificate so that I may contribute more fully to the team by being able to care for the smallest of our patients. I have spent my entire hospital nursing career working with neonatal patients. I look forward to being able to practice out in the community and to making a positive contribution in the pediatric population.

How UTEP Promoted my Personal Growth

I would like to take this opportunity to express how the UTEP Graduate Nursing Program has promoted my personal growth. I am extremely grateful that the Nurse Educator program afforded me not only the opportunity to continue to learn, grow and gain new skills as a nurse but to be able to not only exert even more autonomy as an individual nurse but also to be able to contribute to the next generation of nurses.

As an Acute Care Pediatric Nurse Practitioner student I have been provided the opportunity to finesse my assessment skills, develop diagnostic ones and learn how to diagnose which is a whole new realm for me as a health care provider. Nursing as a Practitioner is evolving so quickly, with a unique set of skills & competencies to fulfill this new role. UTEP equips students with all the necessary skills & knowledge to be successful in our new role. The UTEP Nursing Program instructors went so far as to secure a federal trauma grant which provided us with some much needed financial relief as well an unparalleled opportunity to gain trauma experience in the care and management of Trauma patients at a large Medical facility of our choosing. The opportunity I was afforded to gain first-hand experience is priceless. I was able to not only gain personal insight, but I was able to come back home and share what I had learned with my facility & clinical preceptor.

I feel UTEP’s nursing program is not only innovative and challenging but is really focused on influencing the community in a positive manner through the caliber of nurse practitioners it produces…and I am proud to be one of those nurses as well as part of the Nursing Program from UTEP, once again.

Acute Care Pediatric Nurse Practitioner Role

The role of acute care Pediatric Nurse Practitioner is designed to meet the specialized physiological and psychological needs of children with unstable complex acute and chronic health conditions.

Acute Care-Pediatric Nurse Practitioners which represent a segment of advanced-practice nurses, a title that requires advanced education as Acute Care-Pediatric Nurse Practitioner. This is a very specialized and specific training after completion of registered nurse (RN) training and in most instances acute care pediatric experience as well as successful completion of a national certification examination.

Within the scope of the Acute Care-Pediatric Nurse Practitioner is the ability to manage the care of acutely ill children both in the specialty clinic as well as hospital setting ranging in age from infancy to up into adulthood for those children with chronic conditions who are still under the care of a pediatrician. Acute Care-Pediatric Nurse Practitioners are trained but not limited to being able to perform endotracheal intubation, place central lines including arterial lines, chest tube placements, thoracentisis, paracentisis, perform lumbar punctures suturing of traumatic lacerations and avulsions as well as debridement of wounds.

They are trained to both manage the total care of those children requiring advanced pharmaceutical as well as mechanical life support, placement of invasive lines and procedures and of course the diagnosis & implementation of a plan of care in collaboration with the other disciplines.

As Acute Care-Pediatric Nurse Practitioner’s we can help to provide much needed aid for pediatric, hospitalists, intensivists as well as specialty physicians in the outpatient specialty clinic as well as in the hospital setting. Nurse practitioners are able to obtain history and physicals, admit and place orders in for medications, laboratory tests, diagnostic imaging as well as procedures, diagnose, create a treatment plan to include consultations and discharge planning.

Lastly Acute Care-Pediatric Nurse Practitioners have been shown to increase patient satisfaction, decrease costs (as Nurse Practitioners can bill on their own or under a Dr., depending on if care is directly supervised by the collaborating Physician) and shorten length of stay with no increase in readmission rates.

In summary Acute Care-Pediatric Nurse Practitioners are a cost effective way to provide appropriate and timely care, decrease the patient burden placed on physicians as well reduction in length of stay and an increase patient satisfaction all of which are mandates under Obama Care.

demonstrated excellent assessment skills...Martha Salinas”

Ruth worked for the district for 10 years during which she received numerous accolades from co-workers and parents alike for her dedication and willingness to go above and beyond those duties assigned to her.

She is an exceptionally energetic and enthusiastic nurse, not only did she manage the care for a student body of 1200+ students, a faculty/staff of over of 75 as well as any visitors on our campus, and she did so with a smile. Her coordination of school functions to promote student participation, activities, classroom lectures and health fairs was unprecedented in our district. We continue to reap the benefits from the collaborations she created in establishing a rapport with students, teachers and parents alike. She demonstrated excellent assessment skills, this coupled with her continued pursuit of a higher education and research to keep abreast of the most current standards of care made her a trusted source for medical care. Her collaboration not only as a healthcare provider but as a team player who was always willing to help out others, including covering other campuses made her an ideal role model and mentor for other nurses.

In summary I would like to enthusiastically endorse Ruth for any position she is applying for as I know she will prove to be an asset to any medical practice as she projects a charisma that captures the imagination of those around her creating a sense of cohesiveness among her co-workers and inspiring trust in her patients.
