E X P E R I E N C E A N D I N T E R N S H I P S (0- 3 Y E A R S )

• Designing the gear ratio of a 6-speed manual transmission for optimum performance, fuel consumption and maximum gradability.

• Designing the gear ratio and the PGT parameters for an automatic transmission vehicle with given clutch table.

• Study the variation in engine RPM for upshift and downshift and study the fuel map for optimization.

• Design of gears used in an automotive powertrain.

• Transmission calibration by coding on MATLAB, to achieve better overall performance of the powertrain.

• Design of engine and other vehicle components on Catia V5 and later their analysis on Ansys.

• Worked on the nose cone for the FSAE car at UMD Racing, using the sheet metal function in Solidworks, to achieve the best air flow around the body.

• Used DFMEA on the lower control arm of an automotive suspension system and came up with alternate designs to improve the overall strength and performance of the structure.

• Thorough understanding of product development through the V-model.

• Coding on MATLAB to develop a PID controller to improve vehicle stability.

• Prototyping the infotainment UI system for an improved version of the Ford sync 3.

• Benchmarking and customers’ requirement analysis to develop a MY 2025 small sedan. A C A D E M I C P R O J E C T (0- 1 Y E A R )

Vehicle Ergonomics Aug 2020- Dec 2020

• Worked on the important driver packaging dimensions.

• Evaluated the dimensions with respect to driver anthropometric data

• Evaluated the driver package by measuring subjective judgments of drivers on interior package consideration.

• Conducted a study on the visibility of front turn signal of an upcoming vehicle, during nighttime, when the head light is on low beam and high beam setting.

• Collected subjects’ response and analyzed the data.

• Obtained suggestions from the subjects to improve the visibility of the turn signals. Ronal Mookalamada Belliappa

• Studied the importance of craftsmanship in automotive design and the material selection for the interiors of a vehicle.

• Studied the vehicle development process in the form of a V model and studied the role of an ergonomics engineer in the same.

Automotive Powertrain: Aug 2019- Dec 2019

• Studied the wide-open throttle (WOT) output plot of a manual transmission to determine the final drive ratio for given vehicle specification.

• Determining the top speed of the vehicle at a given gear.

• Studied a 9 speed semi manual transmission and determined the gear ratio for each individual gears.

• Determining the vehicle speed and acceleration for given torque convertor speed ratio.

• Determining the acceleration of the vehicle when its launched at WOT.

• Determining the gear forces for given engine torque at specific operating gears. Design of Automotive Chassis: Aug 2019- Dec 2019

• Determining the load on the outer tire during cornering.

• Designing leaf springs for a light truck with given specifications.

• Design for crash worthiness of the chassis.

• Submitted a term paper on the “Study of Control arm of the suspension system and methods to improve the performance by changing the design and material”

• Studied the durability of the lower control-arm and the methods to improve its rigidity

• Altered the original A-profile of the control arm using Catia and various design changes like addition of ribs and change of the central canvas were made.

• The material was also changed to alloys of Aluminum.

• The models were then analyzed in ANSYS and by setting the boundary conditions, the Von-mises stress were analyzed.

• The model with Z shaped central canvas showed the best tolerance to fatigue loading and hence can be implemented in the future.

• Also, steel can be replaced with aluminum alloys (Al6061 and Al6061 M6) for a lighter component with better rigidity.
