Using Statistical Process Control to improve the quality in Utility plant

(Published in IEOM Zimbabwe Conferences 2020)

The Utility plant refers to a steam production plant that uses city water to produce steam. The plant sends the steam produced to heat the main campus core buildings and sanitization process at the medical core.

The pH of the water used to reach a higher limit cause expensive maintenance to the boiler tubes in order to protect it from corrosion.

Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) are the impurities in boiler feed water that reduces the heat transfer rates, increase heat losses thereby reducing the boiler efficiency.

Cost of treatment of fluids after implementing SPC was reduced to $679.00 per day which was $930.00 to begin with. Therefore, with the help of SPC we were able to reduce the cost of treatment by 27%.

Yearly cost before the SPC implementation was $339,450 and the forecasted cost after the implementation of SPC was around $247,835 and that is a yearly saved by $91,615. To reduce the engine casting defects in an automotive company using six sigma methodologies

The automobile company with the aim of eliminating the casting defects in the engine cylinder due to the overheating using Six Sigma problem-solving methodology.

The defect was sand fusion and metal penetration during casting of the product.

The application of DMAIC methodology was extremely valuable in reducing the engine cylinder jamming problem the defect rate per unit was reduced from 0.194 to 0.029 DPU and the capability of the process was significantly improved from 0.22 to1.38.

Improving the efficiency in multi stage battery production line using queuing theory

Improve the performances of an assembly production line by determine the efficiency of each workstation.

Solar multi sprayer was solar based pesticides sprayer pump is one of the improved versions of petrol engine pesticide sprayer pump.

Extend the concept of Solar PV-Technology on “Solar Sprayers” as “Energy Alternate Devices” and Converted into the

“Fuel Operating System” as “Free Energy Operating System for agriculture implementation.

Solar multi sprayer reduces the discomfort to the operator while spraying and it creates the awareness about renewable energy to the farmers.
