Industry Led Research

2008 Pilot Study with Clearinse nasal wash system. N=21. Pediatrician feedback on first-in-human device. Performed at 4 different clinical sites. Attained useful product requirement information as well as validation of concept.

2010-2012 Nasal wash aspirate vs. nasal swab for flu testing with Clearinse device. N=271. Performed at Dell Children’s Hospital and a clinical trial site in Virginia. Compared specimen quality of a Clearinse nasal wash aspirate against swab in same patient with flu like symptoms. Identified the superiority of Clearinse’s specimen when used on lateral flow flu assays. This was performed with a strategic partner, Inverness Medical (now ‘Alere’).

2012 Usability trial of Clearinse nasal wash system. N=30 Performed in conjuction with FDA and their requirement to demonstrate safety and efficacy of the novel system in the hands of consumers.

2017 Nasal wash aspirate vs. throat swab for diagnosis of strep pharyngitis. N=100. Compared specimen quality of a nasal wash vs. OP swab in the diagnosis of strep pharyngitis in those suspected. Nasal wash proved inferior to throat culture 70% vs. 98%.

Ongoing Research at UBCHO

2017-present Evaluation of a novel regional cooling helmet for the treatment of concussion. Evaluating tolerability of this helmet in children who have sustained a mCHI as a pilot ahead of an efficacy study. N=30. Seven patients left to complete this pilot study. I am mentoring PEM Fellow Dr. Kat Osborne in this project .http://www.welkinsmed.com/

2018- Evaluation of a novel intraoral device for the elimination of otalgia associated with ear infections. N=160. A hard-palate forming ‘sucker’ that has been shown to eliminate ear pain in 85% of patients with ear infection in a pilot study of 25 patients. This will be a confirmatory trial. In IRB now. I am the PI along with Dr. Mansour.
